Be Sun & Sunscreen Safe
This Summer!
How Does the Sun Affect My Skin?
Too much sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a
normal part of aging. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages (crystallizes
and thins) the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers breakdown, the skin
begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. The
skin also bruises and tears more easily—taking longer to heal. So while sun damage
to the skin may not be apparent when you're young, it will definitely show later in
life.
Too Much Exposure to the Sun Causes:
• Pre-cancerous and cancerous (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
…carcinoma and melanoma) skin lesions—caused by loss of the skin's immune
…function
• Benign tumors
• Fine and coarse wrinkles
• Freckles
• Discolored areas of the skin, called mottled pigmentation
• Sallowness—a yellow discoloration of the skin
• Telangiectasias—the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin
• Elastosis—the destruction of the elastic tissue causing lines and wrinkles

The Making of a Sunburn
Sun exposure creates heat in the skin. Too much heat results in a burn. It is ideal to
reduce excess heat (inflammation) with Thera-P Relief Gel as soon as possible. You will
immediately feel the skin cool. Repeat often, especially when you feel the skin
become warm. Abundant testimonials attest that when Relief Gel is used to relieve
the heat, the skin often does not peel, and the skin turns from red to tan the next day.
Shedding Light on Peeling
Why do you peel after a sunburn?
Because you didn’t have Thera-P Relief Gel in your medicine cabinet?
Peeling after sunburn is your body’s way of getting rid of damaged cells.
This is necessary because cells damaged by the sun are at risk of "losing
control" and becoming cancer. Due to this danger, all damaged cells
are instructed to commit suicide by repair mechanisms within these cells.
This mass suicide of cells results in whole layers of damaged skin peeling
off, to be replaced by other cells underneath those layers.
What is the big deal if the damaged cells are shed anyhow?
The problem is that the damage caused by UV light is a "double
whammy". In the layers below, the repair mechanisms themselves may
be damaged by the UV rays, which prevents the cells from committing
suicide in the future. You do not even have to have sunburn for this kind
of damage to occur. Skin damage caused by the sun is cumulative.
Long term, daily exposure to sunlight adds up.

UVA is a long wavelength (320-400
UVA
UVB
nm – nano meters) UV and accounts
for up to 95 percent of the solar UV
radiation reaching the Earth's
surface. It can penetrate into the
deeper layers of the skin and has for
years been thought to play a major
part in skin aging and wrinkling.
Recent studies strongly suggest that
it may also initiate and exacerbate
the development of skin cancers.
UVA rays are present during all
daylight hours and throughout the
winter months.
UVB is the middle-range ultra violet wavelength between 290-320 nm. It
is responsible for burning, tanning, acceleration of skin aging and plays a
very key role in the development of skin cancer. The intensity of UVB varies
by season, location and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB
hits the U.S. between 10 AM and 4 PM between April and October.

Carcinoma v. Melanoma
One blistering sunburn in
childhood or adolescence
more than doubles a
person's chances of
developing melanoma later
in life. A person's risk for
melanoma also doubles if
he or she has had five or
more sunburns at any age.
The two most common non-melanoma skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and
squamous cell carcinoma, are directly correlated with sun accumulation over many
years. The most common locations for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell
carcinoma tumors are sun-exposed areas: the face, ears, hands, etc.
Melanoma is different. The sun exposure pattern believed to result in melanoma is
that of brief, intense exposure — a blistering sunburn — rather than years of tanning.
Other risk factors are also associated with melanoma, such as a family history, skin
type, and having a large number of sizable moles on the body. Melanoma can
arise on any area of the body, regardless of whether or not a sunburn occurred in
that location.

Skin Cancer by
the Numbers
One American dies every hour from skin
cancer.
From 1995 to 2004, melanoma has
increased by more than 1 percent per
year in the US – in sharp contrast to
overall cancer rates that have steadily
decreased each year during this time.
47,700 Americans will be diagnosed with
melanoma this year and 7,700 of them
will die from the disease.
In 1930 your risk of developing
melanoma was 1:1,500 people.
Today it is 1:75.
Approximately 1 out of every 5 children
in the United States today will grow up to
have some form of skin cancer.
Some sunscreens absorb into the blood
and raise safety concerns.
The use of sunscreen chemicals is increasing the incidence of cancer.
Melanoma has more than doubled in 20 years in direct proportion to sunscreen
sales. Users stay in the sun longer without getting a burn, which would have
been 'nature's warning signal.'
Our review of technical literature shows that some sunscreen ingredients
absorb into the blood, and some are linked to toxic effects.
Chemical Sunscreens Increase Incidence of Skin Cancer
Scientific studies documented 84% of 832 sunscreen products offered
inadequate protection from the sun, or contained ingredients with significant
safety concerns. At least 51% of products on the market bear claims
considered "unacceptable" or misleading under FDA's draft sunscreen safety
standards released in August of 2007.

Sunscreens: Chemical v. Physical Blockers
Chemical Blockers
Sunscreens that are chemical blockers absorb
UV radiation within a specific wavelength,
thereby diminishing the penetration of UV
radiation through the epidermis.
Physical Blockers
Sunscreens that are physical blockers work by
reflecting or scattering UV radiation. Physical
blockers are effective against both UVA and
UVB radiation. They are made of inert metals
that sit on the skin and are not absorbed.
Free Radical Generation & Damage
From Chemical Sunscreens
In sunlight, some chemical
sunscreens release free radicals
that can damage DNA and
cells, promoting skin aging and
possibly raising risks for skin
cancer. Some act like estrogen
and may disrupt normal
hormone signaling in the body,
and some may build up in the
body and the environment.
“Two-photon fluorescence intensity images of cells deep in the epidermis showing reactive
oxygen species activity following sunscreen application to the skin surface. Reactive oxygen
species can react with cellular components, leading to skin damage and increasing the
visible signs of aging.”
(Source: K. Hanson, UC Riverside, “Sunscreens Can Damage Skin, Researchers Find”)
Why Use Physical Blockers
Such as Zinc and Titanium?
An Environmental Working Group study shows that “consumers who use
sunscreens without zinc and titanium are likely exposed to more UV radiation and
greater numbers of hazardous ingredients” than consumers relying on zinc and
titanium products for sun protection.
“…Consumers using sunscreens without zinc and titanium [are] exposed to an
average of 20% more UVA radiation - with increased risks for UVA-induced skin
damage, premature aging, wrinkling, and UV-induced immune system damage than consumers using zinc- and titanium-based products.
“[Chemical blocker sunscreens] contain four times as many high hazard
ingredients known or strongly suspected to cause cancer or birth defects, to
disrupt human reproduction or damage the growing brain of a child.
“They also contain more toxins on average in every major category of health
harm considered: cancer (10% more), birth defects and reproductive harm (40%
more), neurotoxins (20% more), endocrine system disruptors (70% more), and
chemicals that can damage the immune system (70% more).”

Calcium Carbonate gives cleaning power to help remove stains and plaque, as well as polish
teeth. Provides enough abrasion to remove plaque and stains, but will not damage tooth enamel.
Decyl Glucoside* is a mild cleanser that creates a foam to trap the O2xy™ on the gums and
teeth long enough to provide the antimicrobial / anti-inflammatory action.
Mentha piperta (Peppermint) Essential Oil* starts with fresh, organic mint leaves that are put
through a triple distillation process especially for Chaé Organics. This extra step yields a very
smooth, refreshing, sweet taste and smell, compared with most peppermints that have a sharp,
hot taste. This oil provides the following benefits: analgesic, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory,
anti-fungal and anti-viral.
O2xy™ is stabilized oxygen with a technical, FDA name of Sodium Chlorite* (see the document
available called O2xy™ Antimicrobial Summary for a listing of the clinical reports on all the
bacteria, fungi, and viruses it kills). O2xy™ breaks down to a form of table salt.
Sodium Benzoate is used at an extremely low level as a food-grade preservative to prevent
product contamination, and to maintain optimal homeostatic levels for O2xy™ activity.
Sorbitol is a sweetener that sustains a good pH balance in the mouth. It does not lower the pH of
plaque like sugar, which causes the demineralization of tooth enamel. The source of this sorbitol
is non-GMO.
Titanium Dioxide*, also known as TiO2, is a mineral pigment occurring in nature. It is used for
providing brightness and whiteness and functions as a stain remover/whitener. Chaé secures
TiO2 from mines in South America where the land is clear of acid rain.
Vegetable Glycerin is a humectant that keeps the tooth polish moist, and adds a pleasant, sweet
flavor. Chaé specifically obtains organic glycerin from vegetable sources, versus the commonly
used animal by-product.
Xylitol* is a natural sugar found in plums, strawberries, raspberries, and birch trees. Chaé
Organics utilizes birch tree xylitol. Xylitol replaces sugars that can lead to tooth decay, and helps
prevent cavities by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans. The source
of this xylitol is non-GMO.
Xanthan* is a natural gum that thickens the tooth polish and helps keep it moist for a 1-year shelf
life.
What O2xyBrite is not…
NO Flouride – most toothpastes have the following message on the back of the tube or box
(also see article titled Fluoride Health Risks):
WARNING:
Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than
used for brushing, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center
immediately. As with other toothpastes, if irritation occurs discontinue use.
NO Triclosan - Dozens of toothpastes sold at supermarkets are at the center of a cancer
alert. Researchers have discovered that triclosan, a commonly used antibacterial, can react
with chlorinated water to produce chloroform gas. If inhaled in large enough quantities,
chloroform can cause depression, liver problems and, in some cases, cancer
NO Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - a synthetic foaming agent known to cause problems that include:
1) the break down of protein / gum tissue; 2) inflammation of gums; 3) gastro-intestinal or
liver toxicant; 4) recurrent mouth ulcers*; 5) harsh cleansing* (SLS is an industrial-strength
detergent); 6) dissolves cell membranes* (SLS is used in labs to expose DNA)
NO Propylene Glycol - a solvent that breaks down the gums potentially increasing gum
disease
NO Artificial Colors or Flavors
*Nearly twenty percent of the population suffers from small, painful oral ulcers called canker
sores or aphthous ulcers. Recent research suggests that SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), a
detergent found in 99 percent of all toothpastes, induces these ulcers.
Low RDA Benefits
A common problem associated with toothpastes is tooth sensitivity. Sensitive teeth produce pain
or discomfort when exposed to hot or cold foods, liquids, and sweets. Baking soda (found in
some toothpastes), as well as highly salted foods will also cause discomfort in people with
sensitive teeth. Teeth become sensitive when tooth enamel is worn away, exposing the
underlying permeable tooth layer, known as dentin. Many toothpastes are too abrasive and
actually strip away tooth enamel, which never grows back. In fact, the first thing dentists will
do for patients suffering from sensitive teeth is have them switch to a less abrasive
toothpaste. A toothpaste's abrasiveness is measured by its Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA).
The following table shows the RDA of some common toothpastes, including the low RDA of the
Chaé Organics’ formula.

Periodontal Disease Linked To
Life- Threatening Diseases
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common infections - often
more prevalent than the common cold. The U.S. Public Health Service reports that 98% of all
Americans have some form of dental disease, although most people are unaware that they have
it. The reason for this is simple: Periodontal disease is not painful until it gets to the advanced
stages. A number of studies confirm a link between gum infections and a weakened immune
system, leading to a host of serious diseases, including:
•
Heart disease and stroke: Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are
almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions. Additional studies have pointed
to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke.
•
Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without
diabetes. This is supported by a study reported in the Journal of Periodontology in 1997 involving
113 Pima Indians with both diabetes and periodontal disease. The study found that when their
periodontal infections were treated, the management of their diabetes markedly improved.
•
Pre-term/low birth weight births: Pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be seven
times more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small.
•
Respiratory Diseases: Recent research suggests that bacteria found in the throat, as well as
bacteria found in the mouth, can be drawn into the lower respiratory tract. This can cause
infections or worsen existing lung conditions.
The health of the mouth is crucial to overall health.
