Transcript Earth and Sun
(EARTH AND SUN PP. 320-329)
OBJECTIVES:
•Learn
about the Earth and Sun and
about gravity, seasons, and day and
night.
• Create a foldable to categorize
information learned in today’s lesson.
Key Words
1.Gravity
2.Orbit
3.Inertia
4.Revolution
5.Rotation
GRAVITY: A FORCE OF ATTRACTION,
OR PULL, BETWEEN ANY 2
OBJECTS.
Gravity keeps us put on the ground!
It is dependent on the 2 objects’ masses and their
distances between one another
Earth’s pull of gravity is stronger than the
Moon’s pull of gravity.
Thanks to gravity, planets are held in their orbits
around the Sun.
The planets also need inertia to counteract being
pulled towards the sun by gravity.
Orbit: The path one object
takes around another object.
Inertia: The tendency of a
moving object to keep
moving in a straight line.
THINK CRITICALLY…
What would happen to the
planets’ path of travel if
gravity suddenly
disappeared?
Earth’s orbit is about 574 million miles long.
The Earth travels in its orbit at 19 miles/second.
This means that Earth completes its orbit
around the Sun in 365 ¼ days – one year.
Revolution: One complete trip around the
sun.
SEASONS
Different seasons occur as sunlight strikes
different parts of the Earth at different angles
while the Earth revolves around the sun.
DAY AND NIGHT
The Earth not only moves in a circle around the
Sun, but also in a circle around its axis.
Earth’s rotation is completed in 24 hours.
Rotation: A complete spin on the axis.
In those 24 hours, whenever we
face the sun, it is day. Whenever
we face away from the sun, it is
night.
THINK CRITICALLY…
What is the significance behind
our knowing that Earth
completes a rotation in 24
hours?
DIRECTIONS:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Fold your paper hotdog style.
Cut 2 even strips up to the crease line to form 3
flaps.
Label one flap “Gravity” , the other “Day and
Night”, and the other “Seasons” .
Inside each topic’s flap, write at least 3 facts
learned today about each topic.
