The Outer Planets
They’ve got gas!
Jupiter
• Jupiter is the largest of the eight planets.
• It can fit all the other planets together
inside it.
• Jupiter is a gas giant, and is made of
gases. You could not stand on Jupiter.
• Jupiter has lots of moons, and scientists
are finding new ones all the time. As of
2009, there are 63 official moons.
The Great Red Spot
• Jupiter has a great red spot
that could fit three earths
inside it.
• It is a storm!
• It has been going for more
than 400 years. Ever since
people have looked at
Jupiter, they have seen the
great red spot.
• Jupiter was named after the king
of the Roman gods, probably
because it’s the biggest!
Saturn
• Saturn is the second largest planet, and is
right after Jupiter.
• Saturn is a gas giant.
• Saturn, like Jupiter, has many moons.
• It is covered in thick clouds of different
colors.
• It’s not a dense (密) planet
– in fact, it would float in water!
Rings of Saturn
• Saturn is very famous because of its
beautiful rings. Other planets have rings,
but Saturn’s are the biggest and most
beautiful.
• The rings are made of ice, rock, and dust.
• There are seven rings, and they are called
after letters of the alphabet.
• Saturn gets its name from the Roman god
Saturnus. He was the god of agriculture
(farming), and the father of Jupiter.
Uranus
• Uranus is the seventh planet in the solar
system, and is the third gas giant. It has a
rocky core.
• It has 27 moons.
• It has a blue-green color.
• Uranus spins on its side, not up and down
like the other planets.
• Scientists think that a long time ago,
something might have hit Uranus when it
was still growing, and pushed it to spin
sideways.
• Uranus gets its name
from the Greek god of
the sky, Uranus, or
Ouranos.
Neptune
• Neptune is the last planet in the solar
system.
• It is the smallest of all the gas giants.
• It has 11 moons.
• Neptune has small, hard to see rings that
go around it.
• Neptune has a lot of storms and very high
winds. Sometimes they go as fast as
2,410 kilometers per hour.
• It was the only planet to be discovered
using math and not observation (seeing).
Scientists saw that the orbit of Uranus
changed a little bit, so they thought that
the gravity of something else was pulling
on it. Then later, they saw it using a
telescope.
then
• Neptune gets its name from the Roman
god of the sea, probably because of its
blue color.
