Soil
• I know that the 4 things that make up soil are
rocks, organic matter (humus), water, and air.
• I know that different types of soil have
different colors and different size grains
because of how much organic matter is in
them and which rocks are in them.
Rocks
• I know that rocks are made up of minerals,
either just one mineral or many minerals
squished together.
Erosion
• I know that erosion is the slow process that
breaks down rocks and land. It is caused by water,
ice, wind, plants and animals, waves, and gravity.
• I know that natural disasters also shape the earth.
Unlike erosion, they do it very quickly, but they
only happen once in a while and erosion is
happening all the time.
• I understand that humans can cause erosion or
help control erosion.
Scientific Questions
• I know that a scientific question has to be
measurable, testable, and not start with
“Why”
• I can identify a scientific question.
• I know a scientific question is also called an
experimental question, investigable question
and testable question.
Critiquing Experiments
• I can decide if procedures are clear and
accurate.
• I know that when we repeat an experiment
we expect the same results, different results
can be due to making a mistake in measuring
or having too many variables.
• I can spot when a variable is not kept the
same and know that this interferes with the
experiment.
Tools of Science
• I know that science is when people use evidence to learn
about the natural world, describe patterns in nature, and
develop tools and that anyone can be a scientist.
• I know what kilo, centi, milli, gram, liter, and meter
mean.
• I can use a balance to weigh something, a flag or weather
vane to find wind direction and speed, and a
thermometer to measure temperature in Fahrenheit (F)
and Celcius (C).
• I can choose the right unit to measure an object. For
example, I don’t measure the distance a car travels in
millimeters I use kilometers.
Heat
• I know that heat is a form of energy that can
be generated (made) in different ways. For
example: rubbing your hands, burning
something, or electricity running through
wires.
• I know that heat can be conducted through
some materials (like glass and metal) better
than others (like wood).
Circuits, Conductors, and Insulators
• I know that circuits have to be closed for electricity to
flow through them. I know that switches work by
opening and closing the circuit.
• I know that the parts of a circuit are a power source
(battery or generator), wires, and load (the thing using
electricity – like a light bulb or a fan).
• I know that electricity is a form of energy. It can be
conducted through some substances such as metal or
water but not through others like rubber, wood, or
glass. Materials that don’t conduct electricity are called
insulators.
Astronomy
• I know that the Earth’s Seasons are caused by the Earth
being tilted toward the sun (summer), tilted away from
the sun (winter), or in between (spring and fall).
• I know that the planets orbit the sun, which is a star,
and the moon orbits the earth.
• I know that the moon’s shape is caused by shadows
when the Earth moves between the moon and the sun.
The moon rises in the east and sets in the west just like
the sun because the Earth is spinning.
• I know that stars are really big, but they are so far away
that they look small.
Light
• I know that light is a form of energy.
• I know that light travels in a straight line until it is
absorbed, reflected, or bent by an object.
• I know that a transparent object is see through, a
translucent object lets light through but you can’t
see through it, and an opaque object does not let
light through.
• I know that shadows are changed by where the
light source is placed. For example, if the sun is
right above you, your shadow is small. If it is
behind you, your shadow is long.
