Daniel 10 and 11
God’s last vision for Daniel
Daniel 10
• Daniel was almost 90 years old
• Daniel was fasting and praying: result of
opposition that Ezra describes during the
rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem from
Cyrus’s decree.
• Daniel desired to see God’s work prosper
Daniel’s Prayers
• Chapter 2: God revealed
Nebuchadnezzar’s dream
• Chapter 6: God sent an angel to tame the
lions’ mouths
• Chapter 9: God sent Gabriel to explain the
vision of chapter 8
• Chapter 10: God sent His own Son, Jesus,
to give more revelation to him
Jesus in Daniel 10
• How do we know it was Jesus?
-compare:
Matthew 17:2
Mark 9:3
Revelation 1:13-16
Reactions to Jesus
• The reactions in all passages were about
the same:
-Daniel 10:7-10
-Matthew 17:6,7
-Revelation 1:17
“Don’t be afraid!!”
Our reaction: Isaiah 25:9
Prince of Persia
• Who is the “prince of Persia”?
Cyrus? “Great King”, “King of Babylon”,
“King of Lands” – but not “prince of
Persia”
Satan – John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11 – “prince
of this world”
Michael
• Means in Hebrew, “Who is like God”
• Daniel 10:13 – one of the chief princes
• Revelation 12:7 – was commander of the angels
•
•
that drove Satan out of Heaven
Joshua 5:13-15 – Joshua met this commander –
he was told to take off his shoes for the ground
was “holy”
Exodus 3:2,14-16 – Moses took off his shoes
when he met the “I AM”, Yahweh – GOD!
Michael – an angel?
• Exodus 3:2 – says that Moses met an
“angel” – can God be an angel?
• Angel = “messenger” – James 2:25
• Jesus was “sent” – John 17:3
• Jesus was the “Angel of His presence” –
Isaiah 63:9
• Jesus is the “Angel who redeems us”
Genesis 48:16
Archangel at 2nd Coming
• 1 Thess. 4:16 – voice of “archangel” will
raise the dead
• John 5:28,29 – voice of “Son of God” will
raise the dead
• Daniel 12:1-4 – voice of “Michael” will
raise the dead
• Jesus = Son of God = Archangel =
Michael!!
Complexity of Daniel 11
• Daniel 11 is a very complicated vision with many
•
•
•
details
However, the fact that Jesus came to give
Daniel this vision with Gabriel tells us it is
important
Matt. 24:15 – Jesus says “understand” what the
prophet Daniel said about the “desolating
sacrilege” – 8:13, 11:31
Jesus wants us to UNDERSTAND this vision!!!
Daniel 11:1
• Gabriel had helped King Darius two or
three years before – it is no wonder why
Darius wanted to get Daniel out of the
lion’s den
Daniel 11:2
• “three more kings”
• After Cyrus there was:
-Cambyses (530-522)
-Bardiya (522) – “false Smerdis” – usurper
-Darius I (522-486)
Daniel 11:2
• King “far richer” – “stir up all…Greece”
• Xerxes (486-465) – Ahasuerus – husband
of Esther
• Four years – prepared for war
• 300,000 soldiers in his army went to fight
Greece
• Were defeated in Salamis (480) and
Plataea (479)
Daniel 11:3
• “Mighty king”
• Alexander the Great – after defeating the
mighty Persians the Greeks were hoping
to become an empire; finally Alexander
united them and conquered all of Persia
and all the way to India!
Daniel 11:4
• Alexander died at age 32 in 323 BC at
Babylon while building his capital
• Was survived by:
-half-brother who was brain-damaged
-infant son who was born after he died
Daniel 11:4
• Leading generals killed the brother and
son, and divided up the empire in 301 BC:
West: Cassander
North: Lysimachus
East: Seleucus
South: Ptolemy
Daniel 11:5
• King of South: Ptolemies who lived in
Egypt and controlled Libya, Lebanon,
Cyprus and Judea
• King of North: Seleucids – capital in
Antioch, Syria – ranged in strength – at
one time controlled from India to Greece
Daniel 11:5
• King of south will be “strong”
• Ptolemy I (323-280) – Egypt was wealthy
and easy to protect
Daniel 11:5
• “Prince” shall be stronger
• Seleucus I Nicator – driven out of the east
by another general of Alexander’s – fled to
Egypt. Ptolemy helped him outfit his
army. Seleucus went back to the east,
conquered the general and then
Lysimachus in the north – thus making
him “king of the north”
Kings of the North
• Seleucus I Nicator
• Antiochus I Soter
• Antiochus II Theos
• Seleucus II Callinicos
• Seleucus III Ceraunos
• Antiochus III the Great
• Seleucus IV Philopater
• Antiochus IV Epiphanes
175-164
• Antiochus V Eupator
• Etc. to 65 BC
312-281
281-261
261-246
246-225
225-223

Kings of the South
• Ptolemy I Soter
• Ptolemy II Philadelphus
• Ptolemy III Euergetes
• Ptolemy IV Epiphanes
• Ptolemy V Epiphanes
• Ptolemy VI Eupator
• Ptolemy VII Philometer
• Etc. to 51 BC
• Cleopatra VII

Daniel 11:6
• Kings Ptolemy II and Antiochus II wanted
to guarantee peace between them.
• Antiochus II married Berenice, daughter of
Ptolemy. Divorced his former wife,
Laodice.
• Berenice had a son that would become
king – however, Antiochus didn’t like
Berenice.
Daniel 11:6
• As soon as Ptolemy II died, Antiochus
divorced Berenice and married Laodice
again.
• She was very bitter now – and used her
royal powers to have Berenice, her son,
her attendants, and Antiochus to death!!
Daniel 11:7
• “Branch from her roots” – Ptolemy III
• A brother of Berenice – wanted to get
revenge for the death of his sister and
invaded Syria, marching all the way to
Babylon and voluntarily retreating. His
navy occupied Seleucia, the port that
served Antioch – and Egypt dominated the
Mediterranean for some time
Daniel 11:8
• Ptolemy III carried to Egypt 2500 gold and
silver images that had been stolen from
Egypt (their gods). He was content after
that and didn’t invade Syria for the rest of
his life.
• Egyptians named him “benefactor” –
“Eueregetes”
Daniel 11:9
• The Ptolemies and Seleucids resumed
their quarrel.
• Seleceus II Callinicus tried to avenge the
deep penetration of the Ptolemies and he
attacked Egypt in 242.
• He was badly defeated and returned
home.
Daniel 11:10-12
• “His sons”
-Seleucus III – assassinated (225-223)
-Antiochus III the Great (223-187)
Antiochus III assembled a huge army and
went to attack Egypt. Ptolemy IV who
was “moved with anger” came out to fight
him.
Daniel 11:10-12
• This is known as the battle of Raphia,
June 22, 217 BC
• 70,000 foot soldiers and 5000 cavalry
were involved including both armies
• Antiochus lost 10,000 soldiers and 4000
were taken captive; Ptolemy lost almost as
many. It was a terrible battle.
Daniel 11:10-12
• One of the first times it is recorded that
elephants were used in battle (Seleucids
used 103 from India, and Egypt used 73
from Somalia). Historian spoke of it as an
“awful sight”.
• Vs. 12 – “he shall not prevail” – Ptolemy
IV didn’t follow his general’s advice and
didn’t follow up on his victory that his
generals won for him. Antiochus wanted
a rematch.
Daniel 11:13
• King of the North shall “return” with “great
wealth”
• Antiochus was upset he lost – so he
conquered everywhere from India to
Greece and made his empire large.
• Timing was right for an attack on Egypt –
the new king Ptolemy V Epiphanes was 6
years old! And there was rioting in Egypt
– the Egyptians against their Greek
overlords (Rosetta Stone tells about the
concessions they made).
Daniel 11:14
• This is where agreement ends when
interpreting Daniel 11. Everybody is in
agreement with the interpretation of Daniel
11:1-13
• However, from this verse on most believers
give Antiochus Epiphanes a big role in the
prophecy
• Adventists give more attention to Rome and
to the Roman Catholic Church.
Daniel 11:14
• “Many shall rise” –
-Egyptians rebelled against the king of
Egypt.
-Antiochus made an alliance with Phillip of
Macedon (successor to Cassander – West)
-All of them were against a king who was
6 years old!
Daniel 11:14
• “Men of violence among your people” –
translation NOT “of your sons” – who are
they?
• Many think that this was a group of
Israelites that saw that Syria (Seleucids)
and Egypt were at war and fought for the
independence of Israel. However, no
records of such a group exist.
• Who were the violent people that lived
among Daniel’s people – the Jews?
Daniel 11:14
• Daniel 7:7 and 8:13 tell of a violent power
that would arise and “devour”, “break in
pieces”, and “trample” the sanctuary
underfoot.
• This is Rome.
• This was the time that Rome was arising as a
world power. One historian remarks that
Phillip, Antiochus III, and Ptolemy IV were all
young men when they came to the throne at
the same time. They were great rulers and
kept their Greco-Macedonian culture alive –
but after their reigns, the world was already a
“Roman world”.
Daniel 11:14
• Rome was alarmed that Phillip and
Antiochus had made an alliance against
Ptolemy.
• They feared having a superpower in the
Middle East.
• They warned Antiochus not to attack
Egypt.
Daniel 11:15
• “Take a well fortified city”
• Antiochus didn’t heed Rome’s warning and
attacked Egypt’s well-trained army led by
the general Scopus at Caesarea Philippi
(Matt. 16:13-20 – where Peter confessed
Jesus as Lord) just north of the Sea of
Galilee. He defeated Egypt.
• The Egyptian soldiers retreated to Tyre on
the coast (a well-fortified city) and
Antiochus laid siege.
• Conquered Judea and Palestine
Antiochus III and IV
• Antiochus III is called the “Great” in the
West because he restored the original
boundaries of the Seleucid empire.
• However, in 190 BC at the battle of
Magnesium, the Romans took away all of
Asia Minor (Macedonia, Lydia [Turkey])
from him – Rome was now the
superpower in the Middle East.
• To prove this, they took one of his sons
hostage, Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
Antiochus IV Epiphanes
• While in Rome – he became Hellenized.
• After his father’s death (Antiochus III)
they allowed him to come home and rule
(175 BC)
• His two goals were:
-spread Hellenism (Greek culture)
-restore his father’s kingdom
Antiochus IV Epiphanes
• He attacked Egypt to conquer that which
his father had not conquered (169-168
BC). He had some success.
• Rome heard about it and sent their Roman
ambassador, C. Popilius Laenas, who
informed him that the Roman Senate had
decided that he should leave. He drew a
circle around Antiochus with his cane and
demanded a decision before he stepped
out of it.
Antiochus IV Epiphanes
• In his anger, on his way home to Antioch he
•
•
•
attacked Jerusalem, stopped the sacrifices in the
temple and occupied the city (168-165 – 1
Maccabees says that it was for 3 years, 10
days).
His attack had also financial reasons.
He guaranteed that anywhere in his empire if
someone wanted to build a Greek temple or
gymnasium – he would give them money. This
lead to financial problems.
This is why he robbed the temple in Jerusalem.
Antiochus IV Epiphanes
• Judas Macabeeus led a revolt in 165 BC
and freed the Jews from the Seleucids
• In 164 BC Antiochus died in a battle
where he was trying to rob an Eastern
temple to help his financial problems
• His colleagues called him “Epimans” –
crazy or insane
Why Antiochus Epiphanes is not the
“Desolating Sacrilege”
• He did not “prosper” or “grow exceedingly
great” (Dan. 8:9,12)
• The three years and 10 days he occupied
Jerusalem and “took away the daily
offering” don’t fit 2300 evenings and
mornings.
• Jesus in Matt. 24:15 referred to the
“desolating sacrilege” as a future event,
not as an event that was fulfilled by a
Seleucid king
Daniel 11:16
• “None shall stand before him” and he will
“stand in the glorious land”.
• Pompey, the Roman general, in 63 BC
intervened in a contest for the throne in
Judea and took control of the area
• Nobody could contend with Rome and it
established its dominion over the “glorious
land”
Daniel 11:17
• “Bring terms of peace” – Julius Caesar, the
Roman emperor, came to Egypt where
Ptolemy XIII was a rival to the throne of
Cleopatra VII (he was her 10-year old
brother and husband and co-ruler!)
• Ptolemy XIII drowned while trying to
escape Julius Caesar. Julius gave the
kingdom to Cleopatra VII.
Daniel 11:17
• “Daughter of women” will be taken as
wife.
• Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar fell in love
and got married – and brought her to
Rome.
• He hoped that the wealth of Egypt would
help him politically.
Daniel 11:18-19
• “Coastlands” – Julius conquered much of
north Africa and the Middle East – on the
coast
• “Commander” would put an end to his
“insolence” - Julius loved to exalt himself.
One time he bragged that he killed 430,000
Germans in one day. Many times went into
battle for his own aggrandizement.
• Roman senators didn’t trust him. In 44 BC a
group of 60 Romans headed by G. Cassius
Longinus stabbed him and killed him in the
Senate.
Daniel 11:20
• “Exactor of tribute” – Caesar Augustus
succeeded Julius Caesar. Established
Roman Empire officially.
• Luke 2:1 – says that he declared a census
and a tax for the whole world
• This was the reason Jesus was born in
Bethlehem and fulfilled the prophecy
(Micah 5:2)
Daniel 11:20
• “Within a few days he shall be broken,
neither in anger nor in battle”
• After reigning over the Roman Empire for
more than forty years – he died peacefully
in bed in 14 AD.
Daniel 11:21-22
• “Contemptible person” – in other words,
one who is lightly esteemed or despised.
• Tiberias (14-37 AD) succeeded Caesar
Augustus as emperor of the Roman
empire
• Some historians say that there was a
deliberate plot to blacken the character of
Tiberias – but by all accounts, he was not
a “nice guy”
Daniel 11:21-22
• “has not been given” and “obtain kingdom
by flatteries”
• Tiberias was adopted – and he was not in
line for the throne. The Senate elected
him in his midlife. He came to power
peacefully, mainly by the conniving or
“flattery” of his mother, Livia.
Daniel 11:22
• “Armies shall be swept away before him”
• Tiberias was a very successful general –
he had much success against:
-Germany
-Lydia
-Armenia
Daniel 11:22
• “Prince of covenant” shall be swept away
also
• It was during his reign that Christ was
crucified in Judea at the hands of Pontius
Pilate, who was appointed by Tiberias
Daniel 11:23
• “Alliance”, “act deceitfully” and “become strong
•
•
with a small people”
There seems to be a break in the prophecy after
Jesus’ death
This can not talk about Rome – because Rome
had many people. Therefore, it must be a
prophecy about Christianity and its alliance with
Constantine in 313 AD and the rise of the
Roman Catholic church
Daniel 11:24
• “Come into the richest parts of the
province” – a reference to the financial
dealings of Roman Catholic church, which
became very wealthy in the middle ages
• It will “do what neither his fathers nor his
father’s fathers did” – the Catholic church
ceased to preach the gospel like its
“fathers”, the apostles, and began to be a
political organization
Daniel 11:24
• “He shall devise plans against the
strongholds” – a reference to what was
revealed to Daniel in chapters 7 and 8 as
an “attack” on God’s sanctuary and
Heaven (God’s “strongholds”)
• “But only for a time” – a reference to
God’s limitation of 1260 years for the
church to “prosper” and attack God and
His people (Daniel 7)
Daniel 11:25
• “Stir up his power” against the King of the
South
• Probably a reference to the crusades of
the Catholic church to reclaim the Holy
Land (1095-1250)
• Pope Urban II convinced all of Christianity
to unite and fight against the Muslims with
vigorous, persuasive speeches.
• The Muslims were led by ‘sultans’ or
‘caliphs’ that were headquartered in Egypt
Daniel 11:26
• “His army shall be swept away” - The first
crusade (July 15, 1099) – was a huge
“success” when the Christian crusaders
took Jerusalem. The Christians
slaughtered all the Muslims (and Jews!) –
the blood was flowing “up to the ankle”.
The Christians thanked God with “tears of
joy and thankfulness” for this great
“victory”.
• The crusades (7 altogether) were
somewhat “successful” but failed overall.
Daniel 11:27
• “Their minds will be bent
on mischief”, “they will
speak lies to each other”
• The crusades served
primarily to divide Islam
and Christianity and cause
distrust of the other
“king” on both sides –
something that still exists
today
Daniel 11:27
• “The end is yet to be at the time appointed” –
Pope Urban II and the other popes that
helped organize the crusades promised
spiritual rewards to all those who participated.
They believed that this would unite the
Western and Eastern churches – which it did
somewhat (except for the 4th crusade when
the crusaders attacked the other Christians in
Constantinople)
• God’s spiritual kingdom wouldn’t come until
after the “end” at the “time appointed”: after
1798 and 1844 (Dan. 7 and 8)
Daniel 11:28
• “Great substance” – the crusaders stole
many things and brought them home and
also opened up trade routes for Christian
businessman
• “Heart against the holy covenant” – “work
his will” – the crusades didn’t help the
spiritual well-being of Christianity. They
still continued to persecute not only
Muslims, but other honest Christians that
disagreed with their teachings that
contradicted God’s word.
Daniel 11:29
• “will come to the South”… “but will not be
as was before”
• On the 7th and final crusade (1248), King
Louis IX of France, attacked Egypt and
was taken prisoner. Ten years later, the
Egyptian sultan and his general, Baibans,
drove the Christians out of Palestine until
1917.
• In the 1300’s and 1400’s a few crusades
were planned, but interest was low.
Governments wanted to expand their
territory in North America – not Holy Land.
Daniel 11:30
• “Ships of Kittim” – one of the reasons that
the Muslims began to have success
against the Christians was that they hired
Greek ships to fight with them
• “Kittim” – southernmost part of Cyprus.
To this day, part of Cyprus is Greek.
• “Those who forsake the holy covenant” –
again, a reference, to the governments of
Western Europe forming alliance with the
apostatized Catholic church
Daniel 11:31
• This text uses the same words as found in
Daniel 8:13 and Daniel 9:27.
• A reminder that Rome as an empire and
the church that made an “alliance” with
Rome and took her place in the affairs of
Europe, would hide the tamid ministry of
Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary through
their “profaning” the temple with their
pride, doctrines and political decisions.
Daniel 11:32
• “People who know their God” –
throughout the Middle Ages there were
groups of faithful believers that did not
bow to Rome:
-Huguenots
-Waldensians
-Lollards
-Hussites
-Anabaptists
-Lutherans
Daniel 11:33
• “Though they shall fall by
•
sword, flame, by captivity
and by plunder” – a
reference to the millions of
faithful followers of Jesus
during that time that were
imprisoned, exiled, tortured
and killed by the Catholic
church for their faith
“For some days” – again, a
reference to the 1260 year
period that the Catholic
church was given for its
apostasy
Daniel 11:34
• “Receive a little help” – starting
in the 1400’s true believers
began to receive some help in
their fight with heresy that was
dominant at the time:
-translation of Bibles into local
languages
(Wycliffe, Luther)
-Ministry of Martin Luther, Jon
Huss and Jerome, William
Tyndale, etc.
-Acceptance of Lutheranism by
some princes in Europe
-Muslim attacks on Christianity
Daniel 11:34
• “Join…with flattery” – not all people who
joined the Protestant movement were true
believers. Protestantism also suffered and
got involved in politics and even began to
persecute those who taught anything
contrary to their beliefs in the Bible
Daniel 11:35
• “Some who are wise…shall fall” – arguing
continued between Catholics and
Protestants and all too often wars were
fought over their doctrines
• Example – Thirty Years War (1618-1648)
– that was mainly a Catholic-Protestant
war. Almost devastated Europe. It took
almost 200 years for parts of Europe to
recover.
• Example: Inquisition in Spain (12311600’s)
Daniel 11:
• “To refine and cleanse”…”until the time of the end”
• The Reformation continued to grow with God adding
more and more truth to the movement:
-Martin Luther: Bible…and Bible alone; only Jesus
can save humanity
-John Calvin: separation of church and state; social
ministry
-John Wesley: personal godliness and devotion
-Andreas Fischer: the Sabbath
-Until God could create one movement that would
include all of these truths at the “time of the end”
Daniel 11:36-37
• Similar to the prophecy of Daniel 7
• The Catholic church from 538-1798
claimed to:
-be the only true church of God on earth
-provide salvation for those who adhered
to her teachings
-be “God on earth” – as the pope
-have never erred
-changed the Sabbath and Law of God as
a sign of its authority
Daniel 11:38
• “Honor god of fortresses” – many see this
as a prophecy that the Catholic church
would take up arms to defend its doctrines
• “A god whom his father didn’t know” –
many see this as a prophecy that the
Catholic church would create a new “god”
– Mary, the blessed virgin, “mother” of
God
Daniel 11:39
• “Foreign god” – many see this as a sign
that another god, Satan, would provide
miraculous signs to give power to the
church in the Middle Ages (cm. Dan. 8:24)
• “He shall magnify with honor” and “make
rulers” – only kings that were Catholic
during the Middle Ages could prosper in
their kingdoms. People would not follow a
king that was not in favor with the church.
Daniel 11:40
• Verses 40-45 – there is no agreement
between commentaries and even most
Adventist theologians don’t even venture
into making a prediction or translation
• However, Ellen White states, that the
prophecies of Daniel 11 have “nearly
reached their fulfillment” (9T 14 – around
the year 1900)
Daniel 11:40
• “Time of the end” – usually Adventists
have seen the period of the early 1800’s
as the “time of the end” since the 1260
came to an end in 1798, the Millerite
movement which studied the prophecies
of Daniel and Revelation – which were
sealed until the “time of the end” (Daniel
12:9) and then in 1844 the last time
prophecy came to end (Daniel 8:14)
• Therefore, this would have to be in the
early 1800’s
Daniel 11:40
• King of the South – who ruled the “south”
in the early 1800’s?
• This was still a time of the Ottoman
Empire which ruled Turkey, the Balkans,
southern Russia, Egypt and the Arabian
peninsula at one time; however, it was
now in decline, but still was considered an
empire in 1800’s – officially ended in
1922.
Daniel 11:40
• “King of the South shall attack him”
• Although there were no real tremendous
attacks in the early 1800’s on the part of
the Ottoman Empire, there was a
development in Egypt – which is a country
mentioned in verse 42.
• The French, under the leadership of
Napoleon had conquered Egypt in 1798
• The Ottomans drove out the French in
1801 after Napoleon returned to France
Daniel 11:
• Muhammad Ali had been a general in the
Ottoman army that drove out the French
in 1801
• Muhammad Ali became pasha (ruler) of
Egypt in 1805 and began large reforms
and began to build up his army to cement
his position as the strongest ruler of the
Ottoman empire
Daniel 11:40
• Muhammad Ali did the following:
-industrialized the country and improved
agriculture
-improved education (brought European
teachers)
-strengthened the army (brought French
generals to help him)
June, 1839 – he attacked his overlord,
Mahmud II and defeated the Turks and
overtook his navy
Daniel 11:40
• At this point – Great Britian, France,
Austria, Prussia and Russia – who all
feared a new superpower in the Middle
East – intervened and told both sides to
make some concessions and if they didn’t
agree to it, it would be backed by “force”.
• This fulfilled the prophecy of the 5th and
6th trumpets of Revelation 9 that Josiah
Litch had been preaching – August 11,
1840
Daniel 11:40
• In 1841 the British reduced the number of
soldiers in Muhammed’s army to only
18,000
• In 1854 Muhammed died and British
influence in the country began to grow –
especially during the construction of the
Suez Canal (1859-1869)
Daniel 11:40
• “King of the north shall rush upon him”
• For six centuries the Ottoman empire had
caused Europe to tremble and no
European power could overcome it – but
starting from the 1840’s when they began
to intervene in affairs in the Middle East,
until when, finally after World War I,
Europe gained complete dominance over
the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire
ceased to exist in 1922
Daniel 11:40
• “Shall come into countries and shall
overflow and pass through”
• After World War I, the Allies divided up
the Middle East:
Britain: Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Tanzania
France: Syria and Lebanon
-These were called “mandated territories”
Daniel 11:41
• “Shall come into the glorious land”
• In 1917 during the fighting of World War I
while Britain was fighting to take away
Palestine from the Ottoman Empire, Great
Britain issued the Balfour Declaration
which supported the creation of a Jewish
homeland in Palestine, while protecting
the rights of the Arabs living there
Daniel 11:41
• “And tens of thousands shall fall”
• The Balfour Declaration was eventually
carried out and the state of Israel was
created on May 14, 1948 after the horrors
of the Holocaust when all nations agreed
that it was a good idea
• May 15, 1948 – Egypt, Jordan, Syria,
Lebanon and Iraq declared war on the
new state of Israel
• August, 1949 – a peace treaty was signed
Daniel 11:41
• “And tens of thousands shall fall”
• However, this did not bring peace to the region
– there have continued to be wars and terrorist
attacks:
1956-57 – Suez Canal crisis
1964-present – PLO was formed to raid Israel
and liberate Palestine
1967- June War
1973- Ramadan or October War
1982 & 2006 – Israel attacks Lebanon and PLO
Literally, “tens of thousands” have died in these
conflicts
Daniel 11:41
• “But these shall be delivered out of his
hand: Edom, Moab…Ammonites”
• Although Palestine has been reduced to
half of what it was before the creation of
Israel – Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt
all gained their independence from Britain
and France
Daniel 11:42-3
• “He shall stretch out his hand against the
nations” - Describes the period of when
Europe controlled the politics of these
countries (1918-1940’s) and had
considerable financial interests in the
Middle East
• “and Egypt will not escape” – Britain had
considerable financial interests – especially
the Suez Canal for its shipping – and this
led to eventual revolts by the Egyptians
Daniel 11:43
• “Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow in his
train”
• These were the two countries that were
occupied by the Italians in the early
1900’s, who also took advantage
financially of their occupation. This led
eventually to the revolts that brought
independence from the Italians – just like
the other Muslim countries did with France
and Britain
Daniel 11:44
• “Tidings from the north and east shall
alarm him”
• After World War II what have been the
biggest threats of Europe, USA and the
papacy (king of the north):
-North: Fascism: Hitler’s Germany;
Communism – Soviet Union
-East: Communism – China and Islamic
radicals (terrorism)
Daniel 11:44
• “Shall go forth to exterminate and utterly
destroy many”
• After WWII – the West (king of the North)
has accumulated an enormous amount of
military equipment and nuclear bombs –
especially USA – which we know from
Revelation 13 will play a special role in
prophecy along with the papacy
Daniel 11:45
• “Shall pitch his palatial tents between the
sea and the glorious, holy mountain”
• “palatial tents” – Government with his
laws, area of influence
• “sea” – populated place
• “glorious, holy mountain” – Zion, the new
Jerusalem, Heaven
Daniel 11:45
• We know from Revelation 13 that the
most powerful church (Roman Catholic)
will unite with the most powerful country
(America) to set up “God’s kingdom” on
earth by establishing “God’s law” on earth
and enforcing all to obey it in an effort to
unite the world “for God”.
• This prophecy helps us see how this is
possible – this “unity” will be to fight
against communism, atheism and
terrorism (alarming news from north and
east)
Daniel 11:45
• “He will come to his end
•
•
with no one to help him”
This is unmistakably a
reference to the second
coming of Christ.
No one will be able to
survive the glory of the
Lord – no government
or church
