An introduction to the
Dewey Decimal Classification System
Presented by: Kristin Hunt
A presentation for McCleskey Middle School Dragon Trainers
Purpose
This presentation is intended to
provide teachers and faculty of
McCleskey Middle School Dragons
(aka dragon trainers) with a brief
overview of how non-fiction books in
the media center are organized using
the Dewey Decimal System. At the
conclusion of this presentation,
teachers to know where to find
materials for their students related to
the subjects they teach.
About Dewey
• The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was developed by
Melvil Dewey, a college librarian, in 1871 after he became
frustrated with the impractical system he was using previously.
• The DDC categorizes titles by subjects, using a system of
Arabic numbers and systems.
• Each DDC number is represented by three numbers. For
further classification, a decimal and more numbers may follow.
• The DDC call number is located on the book’s spine.
• The DDC is used in most libraries today.

Dewey’s Ten Categories
The Dewey Decimal Classification organizes books into ten
general categories, which we also use at McCleskey:
000-099 : General Works
100-199 : Philosophy & Psychology
200-299 : Religion
300-399 : Social Sciences
400-499 : Languages
500-599 : Science & Math
600-699 : Technology (Applied Sciences)
700-799 : Fine Arts & Recreation
800-899 : Literature
900-999 : Geography & History
