In the Shang Civilizations of the
Yellow River Civilization, bronze
casting was developed. Later on, when
the superiority of iron came over
bronze, it caused for better furnaces to
be made that could hold more heat.

China was the most isolated civilization
that was studied so far. To the west and
southwest, high mountain ranges and
brutal deserts blocked easy movement.
The Chinese heartland lay along the east
coast and the valleys of the Huang He and
the Yangzi. In ancient times and today, the
rivers were used for irrigation and
transportation.

Record Keeping
Chinese writing was a system of
pictographs and ideographs. Some
of the oldest examples were oracle
bones. Written Chinese took shape
almost 4, 000 years ago. The
Chinese language includes over tens
of thousands of characters
representing a word or idea. Over
the recent years, Chinese has been
simplified, but is still the hardest
language to learn. Students must
learn over 10,000 characters
compared to English or Arabic,
which only contains 2 dozen
symbols representing sounds.

Cities
From the unearthed city of Shang, you
could see how people lived. For the
kings and powerful nobles, palaces
and tombs were placed in the city,
while for the peasants who lived in
dug out, thatched-roof pit houses.
Shang China resembled much of
Sumer then of Egypt.

The people specialized in farming and
trade. They grew crops and were the first
to cultivate cotton and weave it into cloth.
They were also traded and they had ships
to carry cargo to distant lands. They
depended a great deal on trade. Without

Cities
The two main cities in this civilization
was Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. The
most striking feature of these two
cities is that they were carefully
planned. These cities were laid out in a
grid pattern. The houses were built of
uniform oven fired clay bricks. The
houses had pluming systems, with
baths, drains, and water chutes. These
led into sewers beneath the streets.

The land has an arc that curves from
the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian
Gulf. It had dark rich soils, and golden
wheat fields that gave it it’s name The
Fertile Crescent. It was easy for
nomadic herders, ambitious invaders,
and traders to overcome the few
natural barriers across the Fertile
Crescent.

One greatly honored profession was that of
a Spartan soldier. Spartan warriors were
taught and trained from the age of seven, if
you made it past birth inspection. If you
didn’t make it past birth inspection, you
were thrown over a cliff and left to die. By
the time the boy becomes twenty he is sent
to the barracks to be a full time soldier.
Life as a Spartan was that of physical,
mental and spiritual toughness. Married
life also depended on how fast or strong
you were. If you were the strongest
women, you married the strongest man. If
you were the fastest women, you married
the fastest man.

The Greeks were the first to read and
write with an alphabet, which in time
led to modern European languages.
There were 3 different dialects that
was spoken through Greece Ionic,
Aeolic and Doric. The first surviving
script, found in Greece was the Linear
B found in 1953 used in the archaic
Mycenaean dialect. Greek was written
in the Greek alphabet derived from the
Phoenicians. Also as in ancient Greek
and Phoenician, the words are written
from right to left.

that of Sparta. Sparta was a city of
great military defenses. Boys were
under brutal training to become great

trained rigorously to bare strong
children, so they were told to exercise
and stay strong. Life as a Spartan was

Technology
One great technology, that was created
by the Greeks, that we all know and
love, is the shower. Compared to the
bathing system of Greece, the showers
of China and Mesopotamia were
rudimentary. Usually after exerting
themselves in the stadium, Greek
athletes would freshen up after words.
The remains of the whole complex
system were found in the excavated
gymnasium of Pergamum. The water
came from the shower head and would
fall onto the bather, then slowly drain
down into another bath, until going
down the drain, inadvertently giving
them a foot bath as well.

Greece is part of the Balkan Peninsula,
which extends in to the Mediterranean
Sea, which also had mountains which
mad isolated valleys. Because of the
isolation, city states were dived either
by water or mountains. Also, even
though it may have divided them, the
sea was a vital part of Greek life. With
the ability to travel on sea, it wasn’t
hard for travel, trade and different
cultures to filter through the people.
This created new ideas and customs,
and it also brought metal, grain, wine

The Agricultural Provider is someone

Both males and females may retain

takes up to at least ten people for it to
run smoothly, so more than likely
families will be working there as well.

In our Utopia, there are several languages
spoken in the area. There English, Spanish,
Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Arabic and
some other languages. Because of the
many languages there are many archives
for service information. Each archive
holds any kind of book or new article,
written in that language. English, Spanish
and Greek are quite easy to store because
of their alphabet. Coincidently this makes
it hard for Japanese, Chinese and Arabic
harder because they have characters
instead of individual letters. However the
cultural diffusion is a wonderful way for
new understanding of the people around
us.
