Types of Neurons and
Nerve Impulses
Parts of a Neuron
Cell body
Axon – nerve fiber running
from cell body to synapse
Synapse – terminating end of
neuron
Dendrite – branched receptors
on cell body
Myelin sheath – fat deposits
that insulate axon
Nodes of Ranvier- gaps in m.s.
Classifying Neurons
Can be classified by function
Sensory neurons

Begin afferent pathway
Receptors or naked nerve endings (pain)
Motor Neurons

Efferent pathway
Interneurons

Connect motor and sensory neurons
Types of Neurons
Multipolar – multiple
fibers extending from
the cell body

Ie. Motor neurons
Bipolar – two fibers

Ie. Interneurons
Unipolar – only one
process

Ie. Sensory neurons
In PNS
Action potential travels faster because of
Schwann cells
Can’t move through myelin, so skips over
them, causing impulse to travel faster
Blocking Nerve Impulses
Some things can slow down or stop nerve
transmission
Alcohol, Drugs, Anesthetics, can all slow down
nerve transmission.
