The Vestibular System
BY: Shanice Craig
The Definition
The vestibular system, allows
you to to stand up-right,maintain
balance and move through
space. It coordinates info from
the vestibular organs such as,
Inner ear
Eyes
Muscles
Joints
Palms& hands
Fingertips
Without this system you
wouldn't be able to walk or
keep balance.
Vestibular System “Gone
Bad”!
Some dysfunctions in the
system can cause anxiety
or panic attacks, a need
for self-simulation,
abnormal muscle tone.
Very bad grades,
drooling, also ear
infections. Digesting food
can be hard as well.
Exercises that activate a
wide range of movement
to the vestibular organs
have been found to
reduce various vestibular
problems.
Vision
About 20% percent of
visual neurons respond to
vestibular simulation.
Some adults that have
damages in the inner ear
can learn how to depend
on visual info, to maintain
their balance. But if visual
info is removed or
distorted, the individual
will feel as if they are
drifting or falling.
Feet
The pressers on the sloes
of the feet provide
important info to the
vestibular areas of the
brain about the textures
of the ground. Its used to
indicate weight and
posture adjustments that
allows you to stand up
straight and movement
through out space.
The (inner) Ear
The ear accounts 60% of
proper balance. The
inner ear responds to
movement in three
planes:
Vertically up & down
Over the top of the head
from left shoulder too right
shoulder
Horizontally left & right.
Very important part of the
system.
Fun Facts
Is the first sensory
system to fully
develop by six
months after
conception.
Controls movement
and balance.
Nearly influences
everything we do!
Smell, taste and
touch are the three
categories of human
processing that are
relatively unaffected
by vestibular function.
