The Nervous System

The Nervous System
• Central Nervous System (CNS)
– Includes all neurons in brain and
spinal cord
• Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
– Neurons (sensory and motor) that
run to and from CNS
• Connects fingers, toes, etc. to spinal cord
The Nervous System
These systems work as connecting and coordinating
systems b/w the sense organs, muscles and glands
The Nervous System
Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
– Transmits stimuli from your senses to CNS
and from CNS to muscles
• Example: feel a hot stove and pull hand away
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
(automatic)
– Regulates activities of vital organs
• Lungs, stomach, intestines, heart liver,
eliminative organs, and reproductive
organs
– We usually cannot voluntarily control
these activities
• Exceptions: hold breath, control blood
pressure, blinking, sneezing
The Nervous System
2 divisions of the ANS:
• Sympathetic Nervous System
– Arouses us for defensive action –
mobilizes energy
(↑ heartbeat, ↓ digestion, ↑ blood sugar)
“fight or flight” response
• Parasympathetic Nervous System
– Calms us down – conserves energy
(↓ heartbeat, ↓ blood sugar, etc.)
The Nervous System
• Types of Neurons:
(neuron = nerve cell)
– Sensory (afferent) neurons
– Takes info up to brain
(sense, intake)
– Interneurons
– Processes information
(turnstile)
– Motor (efferent) neurons
What happened?
Perception?
What should we do
about it?
– Controls the physical, motor
response – muscle skills
(movement, out)
