THE BRAIN
The Mind
Vs.
Not a thing.
Soggy white mass with many specific
areas designed for certain functions.
Name given to
activities performed
by the brain and
central nervous system.
The Brain
***Weighs about 3 pounds.
*** 2 sides called Hemispheres.

THE BRAIN HAS ANOTHER MAJOR DIVISION FOR US TO KNOW FOR CLASS:
1) HINDBRAIN: CONTROLS MANY NON-VOLUNTARY FUNCTIONS
(Breathing, heart rate, balance, muscle control, etc....)
•
2) FOREBRAIN: CONTROLS OUR INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY. (Our ability
to reason and comprehend info.)
******HOW DO HUMANS THINK: (many different ways)
4 IMPORTANT WAYS FOR OUR IDENTITIES
1) IMAGINATION: Parade of images and events.
2) DREAMING: Imagination while you are sleeping.
3) REASONING: tells us how to find the answers or solve a problem without
a routine answer through logic and use of common sense.
4) PROBLEM-SOLVING: Using what we have learned to understand and solve
something new.
Our brains are extremely
important in the perception process.
Every second about 100 MILLION
messages reach our brains through our
5 senses:
1. SIGHT
2. TOUCH
3. TASTE
4. HEARING
5. SMELL

The brain consists of roughly 100 billion
living nerve cells called Neurons and
approximately 1 trillion glial (glue) cells
that hold them together.
These neurons are linked through connections
called synapses that relay information to one
another and to other parts of the body.
The brain regulates and controls all bodily
systems that keep us alive and conscious.
How Do We Learn?: 1) When new information comes in through our senses, it establishes a
protein marker on a neuron. 2) Sleep is required within 18 hours of learning to retain that info.
This info is shared by AXONS and SYNAPSES with other neurons. DENDRITES receive info from
other neurons in the reverse fashion. 3) The sleep cycles we go through allow for periods of
“rewiring” and “circuit testing”. The average neuron has 1,000 -10,000 synapses linked to it.
Neurons not in use for long periods of time are “blown up” by CALPAIN “the suicide bomber” of the
brain. It is a chemical designed to remove neurons that are not active to better enhance the
function of the brain.
The removal of neurons in this way is known as “PRUNING”. You are born with 200 billion neurons
and by adulthood have 100 billion left.
Our brains also have the remarkable ability to move their functions from one area to another if one
part of the brain is damaged. This is known as “PLASTICITY”.
It was once believed that unlike
other cells in the body, once a brain
cell is destroyed it was not
replaced!!! New research shows
neurons can be regrown and be
functional.

Brain Cells!!!
No two brains are
identical. (Proven in
Labs)
Many complex
structures and
connections within
each individual brain.
The brain is the most
physically inaccessible organ
in our bodies, making its study
and repair a difficult process.
Researchers still do not have a
full understanding of the brain.
