Functions of the Nervous System
1) Receives Information
2) Responds to Information
The Nervous System
• The control
center for the
entire body.
• Made up of
brain, spinal
cord, and
neurons.
Brain
• Coordinates actions and reactions
Nerves/Neurons
• Cells that carry messages back and forth
from the brain.
Spinal Cord
• A group of
neurons along
the spine that
carries
information from
the brain to the
rest of the body.
Autonomic
• When your nervous system works
automatically, like when your heart beats.
Somatic
• When you tell your body what to do
(voluntary), like petting a cat.

Autonomic Nervous
System
Draw three examples of
human body functions
controlled by the autonomic
nervous system.
Somatic Nervous
System
Don’t Touch That
Cactus!
Draw three examples of
human body functions
controlled by the somatic
nervous system.
Draw someone touching a
cactus, and the path of the
impulse as it travels through
the nervous system.
