Nervous System
Is the body’s control center.



Carries messages to and from the brain.
Controls senses, thoughts, movements and
bodily functions.
Neurons are the cells that make up the
nervous system
They send and receive information in the form of
tiny electrical charges.
Nervous System
Central nervous system

Consist of the brain and the spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system

Consist of the nerves that connect the central
nervous system to all parts of the body.
Nervous System
The brain is the command center or
coordinator of the nervous system.

The brain receives and screens information,
then sends messages to other body parts.
Cerebrum-is the largest part of the brain.



Processes thoughts
Interprets information from the sense organs.
Controls voluntary muscle movement.
Cerebellum-maintains balance and coordination.
Nervous System
Brain stem-connects the brain to the spinal cord.

Controls involuntary muscle movement such as
breathing.
Nervous System
Spinal cord-long bundle of neurons that
relays messages to and from the brain and
all parts of the body.
Problems Of The Nervous System
Injuries

Head, neck and back injuries can lead to
paralysis.
Disorders

Multiple sclerosis is a disorder that causes
damage the protective outer coating of some
nerves, prevents them from transmitting
signals.
Problems Of The Nervous System

Cerebral palsy-a group of disorders caused
by damage or injury to the brain as it is
developing.
Infections



Polio
Rabies
Meningitis
Drug and alcohol use
Caring For Your Nervous System
Protect yourself from disease.
Wear a helmet when needed.
Play it safe, follow the rules.
Lift properly, use your legs.
Observe all safety rules.
Avoid drugs and alcohol.
