The nervous system is a collection of
nerves and specialized cells known as
neurons that send signals between
different parts of the body
Body’s essential wiring
 Bundles of fibers start
at the brain and central
chord and branch out to
every part of the body
 Contains two parts:
central and peripheral
 Made up of neurons and
glial cells

Encased in bone and controls the
sensory and helps with responding
 Consists of spinal chord and brain which
lies in cerebrospinal fluid (a colorless
fluid produced in the brain)
 Has two types of tissues which are gray
matter and white matter

› Gray matter: nerve cell bodies, dendrites,
and axons
› White matter: axons which cause it to be
white
Consists of sensory neurons and motor
neurons
 Sensory neurons tells the central nervous
system about stimuli; has 12 pairs of
cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal
nerves
 Motor neurons take action and are
connected to the central nervous system
that goes to the muscles and gland

Sensory neurons and motor neurons run
from the middle of the central nervous
system and some organs such as the
heart, lungs ,viscera, and glands
 Monitors the internal environment and
the motor neurons controls the
contraction of smooth muscle and
cardiac muscle






Medulla : part of the brain that controls
heart beat and breathing rate.
Cerebellum : part of the brain that controls
balance and body motion.
Cerebrum : large part of the brain that
controls the senses and thinking
Axon: Fiber that carries messages away
from the nerve cell
Dendrite: fiber that carries messages from
other neurons to the nerve cell body
Neuron: nerve cell
 Relay Neurons: sensory neurons or motor
neurons that carry messages
 Brain: controls all functions of the body.


Spinal cord: sends messages from the
brain to the parts of the body.

Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) (stroke
resulting in the brain losing oxygen
which can cause loss of vision or
speech)
 Aphasia (involves any traumatic injury to
the left side of your brain resulting in
speech loss)
 Epilepsy (a Greek word for seizure, and
this only occurs for certain seizures
lasting a long time and are more severe)


Multiple Sclerosis (is in the central
nervous system and is multiple
degenerations of the insulating layer of
the nerve fibers)
 Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) (a loss of
blood flow in the brain for a short period
of time)
 Alzheimer's disease

› Affects the memory, thinking,
And behavior

Brain scan (placing a radioactive
substance in the blood can image possible
features like tumors)
 Lumbar (spinal) puncture or tap (LP)
(injecting a needle in your lower spinal
column which then allows you to sample
fluids surrounding the brain and spinal
chord)
 Electroencephalography (EEG) (images the
brains electrical activity)

Computed tomography (CT) (x-ray
machine taking multiple images with a
better resolution than a normal x-ray
does)
 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
(shows a high resolution of soft tissue and
does not involve an x-ray)









lack of oxygen in the brain within 5 to 10 minutes.
