SWBAT: Describe the Holocaust
from the perspective of the
prisoners.
What?
• The state sponsored murder of over 6 million
Jews by the Nazis.
WHO?
• Led by Heinrich Himmler- leader of the SS, and
Reinhard Heydrich and the Einsatzgruppen- mobile
killing squad
• Targeted Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, people with
disabilities, slavic ethnicities (Polish and Soviet),
religious opponents, and POWs
Total number of victims 11 to 17 million
When?
• Hitler began his racial program of ethnic
cleansing after taking Poland in 1939.
• Forced Jews to be rounded up and placed into
ghettos and be identified with Star of David.
• By 1942 the Final Solution to the Jewish problem
was settled- genocide or physical extermination
of ALL Jews
Why?
• Racial struggle- Hitler saw Jews as parasites
who were trying to destroy Aryans
• Living space- needed room for German
expansion
• Labor shortage- needed people to work and
manufacture supplies to continue total war
Where? How?
• Jews would be rounded up in Germany and
occupied territories and transported to one of
six labor and extermination camps throughout
Eastern Europe.
Prisoners were also given one set of clothes- stripped pajamas for boys and a dress for girls.
Identified with a colored triangle (pink for homosexuals, yellow for Jews) and a number
Overall 2/3 of Jewish population in Europe were
dead
9 – 10 million non-Jews also dead from
starvation, over worked, or shot.
The End
• Allies were aware of concentration camps but
chose to focus on ending the war instead.
• In 1944, Nazis started to dismantle camps as
Allies marched towards Berlin
• By April 1945 all prisoners were liberated
