The War in the Pacific
Japan launched a surprise attack on the United States
Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7,
1941. In response, the U.S. declared war on Japan.
Soon after, Germany declared war on the U.S as well.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan achieved a long
series of military successes, eight islands fell to the
Japanese. The turning point was in the summer of 1942,
when the U.S. attacked the Japanese in the Solomon
Islands, forcing a costly withdrawal of Japanese forces
from the island of Guadalcanal. Allied forces slowly
gained control in the Pacific, and moved from island to
island, conquering them.

New Inventions
1. The Slinky (1943)




Invented by Richard and Betty James
Richard was a naval engineer trying to develop a meter designed
to monitor horsepower on naval battleships.
He was working with tension springs when one of the springs fell
to the ground.
He saw how the spring kept moving after it hit the ground and an
idea for a toy was born.
New Inventions
1. Silly Putty (1943)





Invented by James Wright
James, an engineer, was attempting to create a synthetic rubber,
but he was unable to achieve the properties he was looking for.
He put his creation on the shelf as a failure.
A few years later, a salesman for the Dow Corning Corporation
was using the putty to entertain some customers.
One of his customers became intrigued with the putty and saw
that it had potential as a new toy.

the miracle drugs penicillin and the sulfonamides
the insecticide DDT
new medical technology based on radioactive by-products of the atomic
bomb
better vaccines
Researchers also improved hygienic measures.
Disability from venereal disease was dramatically
altered by new methods of treatment with the new
drugs.
The increased availability of blood and plasma for
transfusions led to dramatic progress in surgery during
the decade.
Medicine
Penicillin antibiotics are
historically significant because
they are the first drugs that were
effective against many previously
serious diseases.
Sulfonamide is the basis of several
groups of drugs. The original
antibacterial sulfonamides are
synthetic antimicrobial agents that
contain the sulfonamide group.
