Decision to drop the Bomb
• Wanting a swift end to the war and hearing the
success of the Manhattan Project, Truman made
the decision to drop the atomic bomb.
• August 6, 1945, a plane called the Enola Gay
dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Instantly,
80,000 Japanese citizens were vaporized. Later an
additional 100,000 perished from burns and
radiation sickness.
• August 9, a second atomic bomb was dropped on
Nagasaki, 40,000 Japanese people perished.
Post War Policies
• United Nations formed maintain international
peace, security, and cooperation to solve
cultural, economic and social problems.
• Marshall Plan for Europe was a plan to offer
financial aid to European countries damaged
by war in an attempt to keep communism
from spreading (containment)
