October 1935 Ethiopia invaded by Italy
BACKROUND: Italy unsuccessfully tried to conquer Ethiopia in
the1890s. Ethiopia was one of two independent states in Africa.
A border incident between Ethiopia & Italian Somalia in December
1934 gave Mussolini an excuse to jump in.
All arbitration offers from the League of Nations were rejected &
the Italians invaded Ethiopia in 1935 & started a war it won.
Break the Treaty of Versailles
1934: triple the size of the military to 300,000
Submarines were secretly built in foreign dockyards
Air force pilots were trained & military aircraft built
1935: Britain is told of the existence of the Luftwaffe (Air Force)
Hitler ordered conscription - Army has 1/2 million men
Britain and France did not react so Hitler continued his militarism.
1935: Jews are officially declared non-citizens

The two laws were passed by the Third Reich:

German Honor
- forbade marriages & sexual relations between
Jews & Germans
- Forbade employment of German females
under 45 in Jewish homes.
Reich Citizenship Law
- Declared those of German or related blood
were Reich citizens; all others were classified
as state subjects, without citizenship rights.
- the definition of a Jew was decreed

September 1938 Munich Conference: Britain, France, Germany & Italy let
Hitler keep Sudetenland if he promised to respect Czech borders.
This Appeasement [or concession] ceded Sudeten to Germany. They let
Germany do what it did but told Hitler not to do it again or else. Hitler saw it
as a means to continue his aggression.
• In March 1939, Germany took Czechoslovakia. Britain and France reacted
with Appeasement
• In August 1939,
signed a secret nonaggression pact dividing up Poland and agreeing not to interfere with each
others’ aggression.

head of the Luftwaffe, & his generals at Obersalzberg,
Germany that they will invade POLAND.
He rationalizes the invasion as a duty to rid Germany of its
enemies. He also believes the Nazis will get away with it. He
told them…
“Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the
Armenians?"
