WWII—The American Front
Science Passage

You will have 10 minutes to finish
this packet. We will then go over it
as a class.
BACKGROUND
We have already learned about WWII
on the European front, but America
had a different point of view.
American was not in the midst of the
battle grounds, but still had a lot to
offer.
When Japan attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, the United
States found itself in the war it had sought to avoid
for more than two years. Mobilizing the economy
for world war finally cured the depression. Millions
of men and women joined the armed forces, and
even larger numbers went to work in well-paying
defense jobs. World War Two affected the world
and the United States profoundly; it continues to
influence
us even today.


With less movies being made, more

How to Pay for the War

War Bonds
• This is when people would lend money to the
government with the guarantee of interest
when the money was given back.
• People believed this was the best way to help
“their boys” come back.


• With more supplies going overseas, people
were asked to start their own gardens and

Propaganda


Just like in Germany, America had
Propaganda to get their viewpoint
across as well.
The most common propaganda was
to prove how Hitler was wrong and
that Foreigners were going to get
back at us.
There was fear
that people
would talk and
let government
secrets out
about our ships.

Rationing


People were asked to grow their own
food.
Since the supply of certain materials
was so short, many people had
coupon books telling them what they
could get and how much of it they
could.

While some of America was more
challenged than others, there was
still some fun to life in America.
