Shoah
The Holocaust
The Holocaust was the murder, for ideological
reasons, of approximately six million Jews by the
Nazis and their collaborators.
Between the German invasion of the Soviet Union in
the summer of 1941 and the end of the war in
Europe in May 1945, Nazi Germany and its
accomplices strove to murder every Jew under their
domination. Because Nazi discrimination against
the Jews began with Hitler's accession to power in
January 1933, many historians consider this the
start of the Holocaust era.
The Jews were not the only victims of Hitler's regime,
but they were the only group that the Nazis sought
to destroy entirely.

Order by Himmler On July 19, 1942, for the Completion of the
"Final Solution“ in the Government-General
I herewith order that the resettlement of the entire Jewish population of the GovernmentGeneral be carried out and completed by December 31, 1942.
From December 31, 1942, no persons of Jewish origin may remain within the GovernmentGeneral, unless they are in collection camps in Warsaw, Cracow, Czestochowa, Radom,
and Lublin. All other work on which Jewish labor is employed must be finished by that
date, or, in the event that this is not possible, it must be transferred to one of the
collection camps.
These measures are required with a view to the necessary ethnic division of races and
peoples for the New Order in Europe, and also in the interests of the security and
cleanliness of the German Reich and its sphere of interest. Every breach of this
regulation spells a danger to quiet and order in the entire German sphere of interest, a
point of application for the resistance movement and a source of moral and physical
pestilence.
For all these reasons a total cleansing is necessary and therefore to be carried out. Cases in
which the date set can not be observed will be reported to me in time, so that I can see to
corrective action at an early date. All requests by other offices for changes or permits for
exceptions to be made must be presented to me personally.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE EVACUSTION OF THE JEWS
FROM THE WARSAW GHETTO, JULY 22, 1942
The Judenrat is informed of the following:
1. All Jewish persons living in Warsaw, regardless of age and sex, will be resettled
in the east.
2. The following are excluded from resettlement: […]
3. Every Jew being resettled may take 15 kgs. Of his property as baggage […]
4. The resettlement will begin at 11:00 o’clock on July 22, 1942. In the course of
the resettlement the Judenrat will have the following tasks, for the precise
execution of which the members of the Judenrat will answer with their
lives….*

A number of British soldiers trapped in Warsaw had
found shelter in the ghetto. In mid-June 1942, one of
them escaped and managed to get to neutral Lisbon.
An American official talked to him and wrote this
summary of his experiences:
“Germany no longer persecutes the Jews. It is systematically
exterminating them. The new racist policy, which in cold
calculated cruelty surpasses the horrors of Magdeburg
[destroyed during the Thirty Years' War] or Carthage, was
revealed to me by a British officer who escaped the hell of
the Himmler ghetto in Warsaw. For several months now,
the Third Reich has been brutally destroying the Jewish
population by two effective means: starvation and mass
execution.”*

Evacuation of the Jews
I also want to speak to you here, in complete frankness, of a really grave chapter.
[…]
I am referring here to the evacuation of the Jews, the extermination of the Jewish
people. This is one of the things that is easily said: "The Jewish people are
going to be exterminated," that's what every Party member says, "sure, it's in
our program, elimination of the Jews, extermination - it'll be done." And then
they all come along, the 80 million worthy Germans, and each one has his one
decent Jew. Of course, the others are swine, but this one, he is a first-rate Jew.
Of all those who talk like that, not one has seen it happen, not one has had to
go through with it. Most of you men know what it is like to see 100 corpses
side by side, or 500 or 1,000. To have stood fast through this - and except for
cases of human weakness - to have stayed decent, that has made us hard. This
is an unwritten and never-to-be-written page of glory in our history, for we
know how difficult it would be for us if today - under bombing raids and the
hardships and deprivations of war - if we were still to have the Jews in every
city as secret saboteurs, agitators, and inciters.

In January 1944 a Polish military intelligence report from a polish woman,
code name Wanda, reached London. Wanda had written about
Auschwitz-Birkenau earlier and was believed to be completely
reliable. In her report she describes the processes of selection and
killing:
Each convoy arriving at Auschwitz is unloaded. Men are separated
from women and then packed haphazard in a mass. Children and
women are put into cars and lorries and taken to the gas chambers in
Brzezinka*. There they are suffocated with the most horrible
suffering lasting ten to fifteen minutes, the corpses being thrown out
through an aperture and cremated. Before entering the gas
chambers, the condemned must be bathed. At present, three large
crematoria have been erected in Birkenau-Brzezinka for 10,000
people daily which are ceaselessly cremating bodies and which the
neighboring population call "the eternal fire".**

ON THE JEWS IN THE KOVNO GHETTO ,1941

Again (28.10) 10,000 people have been taken out of the ghetto to die.
They selected the old people, mothers with their children, and those not
capable of working. There were many tragedies: there were cases where a
husband had been in town and on his return he no longer found either his
wife or his four children! And there were cases where they left the wife
and took away the husband.*

…I can confirm today that Einsatzkommando 3 has achieved the goal of solving the Jewish problem in Lithuania: There
are no more Jews in Lithuania, apart from working Jews and their families.
These number:
In Shavli, about 4,500
In kovno, about 15,000
In Vilna, about 15,000
I wanted to eliminate the working Jews and their families as well, but the Civil Administration
(Reichskommissar) and the Wermacht attacked me most sharply and issued a prohibition against having
these Jews and their families shot. […]
I am of the opinion that the male working Jews should be sterilized immediately to prevent reproduction.
Should any Jewess nevertheless become pregnant, she is to be liquidated…*

The photo was found by members of the Polish Home Army enclosed in
a letter written by a German soldier. Member of the Home Army
monitored mail from the east that passed tthrough the central post
office in Warsaw. Letters and photographs of interest were copied
and sent on to the Polish government-in-exile.
The German inscription on the back of the original photo read:
'Ukraine 1942, Jewish Aktion, Ivangorod.'

I am insulted at the amazing audacity of President
Ahmadinejad to organize a conference to deny the
Holocaust.
I have not been able to sleep for the past few days.
48 members of my family were murdered in
Auschwitz during the first week of June 1944,

including my mother, my father, and my brother. I am
the only one who survived and managed to emerge
alive, an orphan for my whole life. I cannot ever
recover from this.
I ask you, diplomatic representatives, did all my
family just disappear? They were murdered. They
have no graves, no one buried them; they just became
smoke and ashes.
We didn’t believe Hitler when he said he would
destroy the Jews, but he did it, he put it in to
practice. President Ahmadinejad has threatened and
I believe him, I fear him.
What insults me is his attempt to wipe out my
memories, my suffering and my CV of pain….
