Key Elements
•Spatial Decision Support Systems
SDSS facilitates the decision making process while confronting semi-structured spatial decision problem. SDSS
are domain specific solutions unlike general purpose GIS.
o Intelligence (is there a problem or an opportunity for a change?)
o Design (what are the alternatives?)
o Choice (Which alternate is the best?)
Facilitates group decision making
– What it is? Where it is?
– How good it is? (effective, sustainable, profitable, socially acceptable and environment friendly)
– What is going to be the impact of it, where and when?
Components of SDSS- Advanced Toolkit
Key Elements- Advanced Toolkit
•Artificial Intelligence
Artificially intelligent computing techniques like ANN (Artificial Neural Networks), fuzzy
Logic, data mining and auto knowledge discovery are used to overcome the problems
where complex linear and non linear relationships are present between dependent and
independent variables. These techniques have proven to be an alternative of empirical
modelling techniques and are widely used in different fields.
In our research we are exploring and
incorporating following AI techniques to
overcome such problems:
o ANN (Artificial Neural Networks)
o SOM (Self Organizing Maps) for
clustering
o GRNN (General Regression Neural
Network) for regression analysis and
prediction.

REPORTS
Seren Neural SDSS (Spatial Decision Support System)
• Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS) combine the power of GIS and
advanced computing techniques to facilitate the decision making process while
confronting semi-structured spatial problems.
• SEREN WP5 team is involved in developing an SDSS for the effective and
efficient adoption of unconventional geo-energy applications in Wales. It will help
the decision makers sitting at different levels of government, industry and NGOs
to confront spatial problems related to unconventional geo-energy applications.
• The SDSS integrates spatial data from different sources covering socio-economic,
environmental-health and geotechnical aspects. It uses advanced GIS modelling
and analysis techniques aided with artificial intelligence, to confront spatial
problems related to site suitability and impact assessment of geo-energy
applications.
• The system is focused at Wales, but is flexible enough to be used anywhere,
provided the spatial data availability, that serves at the core of the system.
