LinkedIn is Your New Resume
Sue Gubing
If you’re not already on LinkedIn join now!
Corporate and agency headhunters avoid
advertising an open position, but go searching on
LinkedIn for what employers call “passive jobseekers.”
(You ain’t lookin’ for them, but they are lookin’ for
you.)
They search by keywords.
“Don’t forget this: for an employer, hiring is essentially
an elimination game.”
Employers look for any reason to eliminate you! Why?
○ To make their task of hiring easier!
○ Their goal: minimum # of face-to-face interviews!
Note: Skilled HR managers can scan & eliminate a resume in approx. 8 seconds!
Moral of the Story?
DON’T GIVE THEM A REASON TO
ELIMINATE YOU!

Advice to the Millennials
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6RHrtobfZk 4 minutes
How do you think like an immigrant?
How do you think like an artisan?
How do you think like a starter-upper in
Silicon Valley? Be in Beta - You are never
FINISHED!
PQ + CQ is better than IQ
Always think like a waitress. Always think
like an entrepreneurial.

2 Challenges:
Bring below skilled students from the bottom to average
Need to bring the average to the global heights
We need more creative, non routine workers
More and better education focused on the 3 c’s: creativity, communications and
collaboration.
Invent, re-invent and engineer their own job
We all have to really become residents of Garrison Keillor's fictional
Lake Wobegon where
…..all the men are strong
…..all the women are good-looking and
…..all the children are above average
Because in this hyper-connected world average is officially over!

The “Nuts & Bolts” of Building the Career Awareness Program for Your
Middle School Students
Susan H. Gubing
Industry/Educational Consultant, CareerSmarts

program. This workshop will define the parameters of the program, the
foundation needed to build upon, the team of builders who you will work with,
and the creative activities you can offer your entire student population. There
will be an opportunity to share your current practices along with a discussion
about concepts career ePortfolios, online career resources, discovering One’s
Career DNA, and establishing a “Career Advisory Board” for your school.
