Background Case
McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:
MCD) is the world's largest chain
of hamburger fast food restaurants,
serving around 68 million customers daily in 119
countries. Headquartered in the United States, the
company began in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant
operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald; in
1948 they reorganized their business as a
hamburger stand using production line principles.
Background Case
Businessman Ray Kroc joined the
company as a franchise agent in
1955. He subsequently purchased the chain from
the McDonald brothers and oversaw its worldwide
growth.
A McDonald's restaurant is operated by either a
franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself.
The corporation's revenues come from the rent,
royalties and fees paid by the franchisees, as well
as sales in company-operated restaurants.
Background Case
McDonald's revenues grew 27
percent over the three years
ending in 2007 to $22.8 billion,
and 9 percent growth in operating income to
$3.9 billion.
McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers,

items, soft drinks, milkshakes and desserts. In
response to changing consumer tastes, the

Supplement Reading
Market Dominance
[1] Market dominance is a measure of the strength of a brand, product, service, or
firm, relative to competitive offerings. There is often a geographic element to the
competitive landscape. In defining market dominance, you must see to what extent a
product, brand, or firm controls a product category in a given geographic area.
1. Calculating
[2] There are several ways of calculating market dominance. The most direct is market
share. This is the percentage of the total market serviced by a firm or brand. A
declining scale of market shares is common in most industries: that is, if the industry
leader has say 50% share, the next largest might have 25% share, the next 12% share,
the next 6% share, and all remaining firms combined might have 7% share.
[3] Market share is not a perfect proxy of market dominance. The influences of
customers, suppliers, competitors in related industries, and government regulations
must be taken into account. Although there are no hard and fast rules governing the
relationship between market share and market dominance, the following are general
criteria:
[4] A company, brand, product, or service that has a combined market share exceeding
60% most probably has market power and market dominance.
[5] A market share of over 35% but less than 60%, held by one brand, product or
service, is an indicator of market strength but not necessarily dominance.
[6] A market share of less than 35%, held by one brand, product or service, is not an
indicator of strength or dominance and will not raise anti-combines concerns of
government regulators.
[7] Market shares within an industry might not exhibit a declining scale. There could be
only two firms in a duopolistic market, each with 50% share; or there could be three
firms in the industry each with 33% share; or 100 firms each with 1% share. The
concentration ratio of an industry is used as an indicator of the relative size of leading
firms in relation to the industry as a whole. One commonly used concentration ratio is
the four-firm concentration ratio, which consists of the combined market share of the
four largest firms, as a percentage, in the total industry. The higher the concentration
ratio, the greater the market power of the leading firms.
[8] Alternatively, there is the Herfindahl index. It is a measure of the size of firms in
relation to the industry and an indicator of the amount of competition among them. It
is defined as the sum of the squares of the market shares of each individual firm. As
such, it can range from 0 to 10,000, moving from a very large amount of very small
firms to a single monopolistic producer. Decreases in the Herfindahl index generally
indicate a loss of pricing power and an increase in competition, whereas increases
imply the opposite.
2. Market dominance strategies
[9] Market dominance strategies are marketing strategies which classify businesses by
reference to their market share or dominance of an industry. Inorganic market growth
is key strategy adopted by companies to dominate the market.[citation needed]
Microsoft is an apt example of market dominance strategy, which kept acquiring
companies in the field of its business to reduce competition.
[10] Here are some examples of a market dominant products:
Adobe Flash
Adobe Photoshop[citation needed]
Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office[citation needed]
Intel personal computer processors
Google Internet search
Cisco Ethernet switching
Dolby audio technologies
ARM mobile phone chips

Almost all business people want to see improvements in
sales and profits. But how do you reach those goals? You
must consider the following four strategic options:
1. Sell existing products to existing customers.
2. Develop new products to sell to existing customer groups.
3. Expand existing products into new market segments.
4. Develop new products for new market segments.
Each one of these choices carries with it inherent risks and
certain marketing implications. Which one is right for you?
This is one of the most important decisions to be made. In
fact, in order to suit different products or different areas of
the business, the best strategy may combine more than one
of these options.
Among these four choices, the least risky option is number
1. Simply find more customers for your existing products.
Sometimes this is easier said than done, especially if you
already have a dominant market share or you occupy a
relatively small market niche.
The option with most risk is number 4, going into new
markets with a new product. This classic “diversification”
move may appear to offer great potential, but it can be
much risky if you do not understand market conditions well.
In each of the other two strategic options the business holds
either an understanding of the customers (option 2) or the
products (option 3), so the overall risk is somewhat
lessened.

Marketing is more of an art than a science. Oftentimes you
learn by systematically trying different activities and
approaches. The experts don’t always have all the answers
and this is exactly why you need to give plenty of personal
attention to make sure your marketing is working as hard as
it possibly can. If you want to get serious about success in
business, then understanding marketing is an ongoing
priority.
Here’s a quick list of 10 ideas to get you into the marketing
groove:
1. Commit to reading one new marketing book per month.
2. Start learning about how to market online.
3. Make a list of people whose businesses inspire you, and
carefully study their marketing techniques. How many of
these are you using?
4. Make a list of successful people in your industry and check out their
marketing strategy. Why not offer to take one of them out for coffee to
learn more about how they got where they are (what’s the worst that
could happen?)?
5. Revise your marketing budget. Look at your previous investment in
marketing, and ask yourself if this is the amount a truly successful
business would be spending.
6. Review all of last year’s marketing activities. Work out which ones
brought new business in the door, or were successful in some other way
(building credibility for example ). If you can’t quantify how successful
the outcome was, stop spending the money!
7. Implement an ongoing “keep in touch” program with existing
customers.
8. Ask 10 or more of your most loyal customers for a referral.
9. Stop doing those marketing activities that you know don’t works, but
you do them anyway.
