and using plants for decorative purposes.

Floral Production: involves growing of flowering
or foliage crops to sale size of maturity.

Landscape and Nursery Industry: the science
and practice of propagating, growing, installing,
maintaining, and using grasses, annual plants,
shrubs, and trees in the landscape.

Floriculture: the “culture of flowers” –
The science and practice of growing,
harvesting, storing, designing, and
marketing flowering plants.

Pomology: the science and practice of
growing, harvesting, handling, storing,
processing, and marketing tree fruits.

Olericulture: The science and practice of
growing, harvesting, storing, and marketing
vegetables.
Career Opportunities
Careers in the floriculture industry can
include a sound understanding of plants
and plant growth or a strong background
in business.

Duties

Grower:
 Person in charge of crop production
 Specialized growers may focus on one or
more specific crops

Propagator:
 Employee trained in plant propagation
 Production begins with some form of plant
reproduction (by seed or a portion of a plant)

Greenhouse /Nursery Worker:
 Often may start as unskilled workers
 Duties may include:
○ potting,
○ Disbudding
○ Watering
○ applying pesticides and fertilizers
○ packaging crops
○ maintaining greenhouses structures and
equipment
Duties

Marketing Manager:
 Also referred to as a Wholesale Manager
 Responsibility of moving the crop to the
customer
 Promotes sales of crops and handles orders

Landscaper:
 Laborer
 Implements landscape design and
ornamental lawn care
