Transcript Mitosis

Mitosis
How eukaryotic cells
reproduce
• Before mitosis
• The cell grows and copies its
organelles and DNA (chromosomes)
• After chromosomes are duplicated,
copies are called chromatids and are
held together at the centromere
• During mitosis
• Chromosomes condense into
straight lines
• Nuclear membrane dissolves
• Paired chromatids line up in the
middle of the cell
• Chromatids separate and move to
opposite sides of the cell
• Nuclear membrane reforms around
the new sets of chromosomes
• Chromosomes unwind
• After mitosis
• The cytoplasm splits in two
– In animal cells, the cell membrane
pinches
– In plant cells, a cell plate forms
• The cell cycle in complete. These
two new cells are identical to each
other and the original cell, and they
are at the beginning of their cell
cycle.
