What is evolution?
The process in which
organisms change over time
Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck
 A French
Naturalist (studies nature)
 In 1809, 1st scientist to propose a theory on
evolution
Theory
An explanation that is
supported by evidence.
Charles Darwin
 A British
Naturalist
 In 1831, sailed on the HMS Beagle and
visited the Galapagos Islands and collected
lots of data.
 In 1859, he published a book, On the Origin
of Species, proposing his theory of evolution.
Lamarck -vs- Darwin

Organisms acquire
traits and pass them
on to their offspring

Organisms that are
better adapted to their
environment survive
and reproduce more
successfully
To obtain

A lion runs a lot so he gets stronger leg
muscles than the other lions. Because the
lion got stronger legs muscles he could
then pass this trait on to his offspring.
Having a trait that improves an
organisms ability in a particular
environment

There are giraffes with long necks and
giraffes with short necks. Giraffes like to
eat the leaves off of trees. After several
years of drought, the short neck giraffes
become extinct due to lack of food. But,
the long neck giraffes can reach the tops
of trees to continue to get their food.
Who do you agree with?
Lamarck
Traits were
acquired
and passed
to offspring
Darwin
Certain inherited
traits allowed an
organism to
survive better in a
particular
environment

Think about how your assigned naturalist would explain
…….
Where
did the green trait come from?
Why are most of the Zirconians green and
not red when the astronauts returned?
