Block 2
Unit 7 Project
Why is Evolution Important?
• Understanding evolution represents a
huge achievement in science.
• Successfully explains diversity and has
been confirmed multiple times
• Foundation of modern biology
• Opened the door for research and
techniques
How Science Works
• Observe nature and test questions
• Ideas accepted or rejected based on
evidence
• Scientific Theory’s – well established ideas
• Evolution is a theory
The Theory of Evolution Has Been
Repeatedly Tested and Confirmed
• Basis of Evolution – Traits pass from
parents to children, traits change between
some generations
• New traits that help one survive become
more widespread, don’t help become less
widespread
• Natural Selection – Some traits succeed
some don’t
The Fossil Record
• Evolution is supported by fossil evidence
• Younger rocks – Closer to todays life
forms
• Older rocks – Less Similar
• Fossils repeatedle confirm changes in lifee
forms
DNA Research
• Molecular Biology and Genetics further
prove evolution
• DNA passes on traits from parents to
children
• Support findings from other scientific
branches
Common Ancestry
• Bones very different but also similar
• Ancestral species make up todays species
• Any two living species can be traced back
to the same ancestor
• Adds to the evidence of evolution and
natural selection
Creationism in the Classroom?
• Creationism should be added to textbooks
along with biological evolution
• Based on beliefs
• Argue evolution is faulty because of gaps
in fossil records
• To complex to have randomly been made
• Creationism not scientific enough
Science Vs. Religion
• Some scientists have had their faith
enhanced
• Some religious people believe in evolution
Evolution in Action
• In China many people were in infected
with severe Pneumonia
• Using DNA microarray scientists found
what family of viruses it fell into and
began a vaccine within 24 hours
• Understanding evolutionary origins helps
find vaccines to new mutated viruses
Tiktaalik
• Scientific-using principles of evolution, try
to determine new fossils
• Predicted a half land half water creature
• Found it in Canada, called Tiktaalik
• Filled another gap in fossil evidence
