Evolution and Creation
Using the criteria for the theory of evolution below,
read through the creation story to see if you
think the two are compatible.
Evolution
• All creatures have a common ancestor
• Species adapt and change over millions of years
• Dinosaurs once lived
• Natural selection – nature determines the
different kinds of animals that survive
• Variation – random natural variations in species
make new species of creatures

The Meaning and Purpose of Life
What does evolution suggest about the meaning
and purpose of human beings? Do humans
have a special place in creation?
Evolution
• All creatures have a common ancestor
• Species adapt and change over millions of years
• Dinosaurs once lived
• Natural selection – nature determines the different kinds
of animals that survive
• Variation – random natural variations in species make
new species
The Darwinian view of humans…
Positive:
Negative:
Each person is a link in the process
of evolution – we are the future of
the human race
Humans are no more than slightly
more advanced animals
Each person is evidence of the
brilliance of the evolutionary
mechanism and natural selection
Humans are more advanced forms
of animals
The amount of time taken to create
humans (millions of years) shows
how much work has gone into them
Human life probably has no value
apart from the very short time each
individual is alive
The creation of human beings was
a lucky genetic mutation
Humans have no more right to be
on the earth than any other animals
Survival is the only thing humans
live for
Evaluate
“Evolution has reduced the importance of
creation stories.” Do you agree?
