Main project issues
6
• NG-PON2 is very different from FABULOUS
• Non-reflective
• TDM
• 10 Gbps per wavelength
• R-ONU release with integrated PD canceled in project amendment
due to fire accident in CEA-Leti
• R-ONU with integrated SOA non yet performing properly

Main budget deviation
12
• STMicroelectronics: choice of travelling wave modulator instead of
segmented MZM for v2 has reduced the effort.
• ORANGE: Personnel movement within the consortium has caused
lower involvement in WP-DEMO.
• ISMB: increased expenses in components and in conferences than
originally planned. Different work split in WP-1 than originally
planned (increased effort on SYST-3 and SYST-4 with a more
experienced researcher). Amendment and extension management.
• Tyndall: high staff turn-over in the packaging group, with different
salaries than originally forecasted. More modules than expected
for multiple releases of Gen. 1 and for studying thermal effects.
• UNIPV: project extension has directly impacted on contract
personnel, requesting contract extensions.

Exploitation plan
13
• NG-PON2 main problems have not been solved yet
• Low cost tunable sources are still an issue. FSAN is
considering solutions for increasing bit-rate per wavelength
and reducing the need of WDM. ORANGE will keep
participating in FSAN.
• Passive Optical LAN are gaining interest. Nokia is pushing them as
well, FABULOUS could provide a potential solution. ISMB is
waiting feedback from Nokia for presenting FABULOUS.
• The DSP has proved to be feasible for real-time transmission. It
could be partly reused for front-hauling applications, such as the
one to be used in the “DSP-Based Channel Aggregation”. ISMB
and POLITO are studying this approach (publications at ECOC
2016 and IPC 2016)

Exploitation plan
14
• It is the intention of III-V Lab to make industrial exploitation of
the photonic integrated circuits on silicon incorporating the SOAs
for optical communication applications.
• Output power level needs improvement
• Short-reach and medium-reach application could be targeted
• Industrial exploitation expected to start around 2020
• The "no clean" flux solder re-flow process for flip-chip integration,
developed for FABULOUS by Tyndall, will be offered to the wider
European Photonics community through the EuroPractice /
ePIXfab access programmes
• By the end of 2016
• Will remove the existing high-cost barrier of developing and
testing high-speed Si-PICs with integrated drivers
• The consortium is committed to keep working to demonstrate the
PIC with amplifiers working in the full system
• In the DoW it was foreseen only at chip level
