Describe Hardware Devices
&
Their Uses
Output Devices
Output devices display information
after data has been processed in a
useful format.
This type of format
can be
TEXT
GRAPHICS
AUDIO
VIDEO
Monitors
• Monitors show images, text, and video once
data has been processed.
Monitors
•Monitor like a TV in appearance is called a
Cathode ray tube (CRT)
•Only choice for over a 100 years
Monitors
• A monitor that is a LCD, is a liquid crystal
display. Flat-panel LCD monitors are liquid
crystal display and are thin and energy efficient.
Touch Screen Monitors
• Touch screen monitors are both input and output
devices. They display images just like regular
monitors, however, the also enable users to
touch their surfaces and make selections directly
from the screen.
• They are referred to as graphics tablets and use a
stylus to write on the screen.
• These monitors are used in retail stores –
checkout counters, airports-fast check-ins,
doctor’s offices, etc.
Pixels and Resolution
The number of pixels a monitor displays are
made up of million of tiny dots known as pixels
Resolution
The number of pixels on the screen determine a
monitor’s sharpness and clarity.
Dot pitch
Diagonal distance between two pixels of the
same color and is measured in millimeters
resulting in a crisper viewing image.
Printers
Printers generate a hard copy or printouts which are
permanent copies of your work.
Two types of printers:
Impact and Nonimpact
• Impact printers have small hammers similar to a
typewriter that strikes ink against paper to leave the
image or symbol..
• Nonimpact printers do not actually touch the paper
when printing.
Most common are the ink-jet and the laser printers.
Printer’s Considerations
• Print Speed- Pages Per minute (PPM)
• Resolution- Dots per inch (DPI)
• Color ouput – Cost
• All in one Printers!!
Computer Speakers
• Speakers are also output devices.
Digital Cameras
• Digital cameras store pictures digitally rather
than in film
• Digital cameras use flash memory cards as
storage media
Storage Devices
Storage devices are used to store data, information, and
programs for future use.
• Magnetic
storage uses tape or film covered in a thin, magnetic
coating that enables saving the data. Media is divided into tracks
and sectors.
Hard Drives and Backup Tape Drives
• Optical storage uses flat plastic discs coated in a special
reflective material. Data is saved by using a laser beam to burn
tiny pits into storage medium. The data is saved using tracks and
sectors similar to magnetic storage.
CDs and DVDs
Main Types of Storage Devices
Hard disk drive or the computer’s main internal
storage. Storage is referred to as gigabytes. the system
unit.
Floppy disk drive This is one of the original storage
devices that is rarely used today.
CD and/or DVD drives are optical drives that are used
today .

Ports
Ports act as an interface or connector between a
system’s peripheral devices and the computer.
OLDEST PORTS
• Serial ports can send data only one bit at a time
Mouse & Modem
• Parallel port sends data in groups of bits (FASTER)
Older Printers
More Ports!
USB or universal serial bus port
FireWire port developed by Apple
Ethernet port resembles a phone jack, but is
slightly larger.
Modem port is the same size and shape as a
phone jack and is used to connect a modem
to a phone system enabling a digital
subscriber line (DSL) or dial-up Internet
access.
Special Purpose Ports
Midi ports are used to connect electronic musical devices
IrDA ports are used on devices such as PDAs, keyboards, mice and
printers to transmit wirelessly to another device by using infrared
light waves
Bluetooth is another type of wireless technology that relies on radio
wave transmission and does not need a clear line of sight
Monitor port is used to connect the monitor to the system unit.
S-video port is used to connect other video sources such as a
television, projector, or digital recorder to a system unit.
Audio ports connect audio devices such as speakers, headphones,
and microphones to a computer’s sound card.
Evaluating Your System
Under My Computer, select Properties to see what
the following items:
•Manufacturer’s name, serial and model number
•Operating system
•Amount of memory
•Type and speed of CPU
•What drives are on your system
•How much storage is available.
