Transcript The Earth and Beyond

Scenario
You are a researcher for a Satellite TV company and have been asked to find
out if it is better to use microwaves or radiowaves waves for wireless
communication between the earth and satellites.
You will need to present a report identifying all the different waves in the
electromagnetic spectrum, their main characteristics and applications.
Explain whether microwaves or radio waves would be more appropriate for
communication between satellites and why.
Criteria
What is Required…
What you Must do…
Pass
Research into different parts of
the electromagnetic spectrum
The terms wavelength,
frequency and amplitude are
explained
Produce a poster showing the main properties of
each part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
A diagram explaining the terms wavelength,
amplitude and frequency is produced, including
examples, e.g. surfing wave and sound wave
viewed on an oscilloscope
Merit
An explanation of how different
waves travel (or do not travel)
through different materials
Diagrams / Posters explaining (1) Why sound
waves cannot travel through a vacuum (2) Why EM
waves can travel through vacuums
Distinction
A description of how we get TV
pictures from a satellite
How is data (for example music)
sent along optical fibres
A diagram showing how a satellite is used to
transmit pictures to earth.
An explanation of what type of wave is used for
satellite communication must be included.
The diagram must include radio stations, the
ionosphere, satellites and receiving stations.
Discuss how data, for example music is sent along
optical fibres. Digital encoding/decoding of a signal
must be discussed. Reference must be made to the
