THE SURFACE BUOY
The next step is the construction and test of
a mooring adapted to YOYO 2001 needs.
The surface buoy should make it possible
for the Yoyo profiler to reach the sea surface. The
Yoyo profiler with its horizontal arm holding the
optical sensors needs a 3 meter diameter hole through
the buoy. A hole of 5 meter diameter makes it possible
for the Yoyo to reach the surface without any damage
during 90% of the time considering wave statistics in
the Gulf of Lion. For the remaining 10% of the time,
the waves are huge and the Yoyo will be told not to
reach the surface, rather, for safety, not go up higher
than -20 m.
The buoy will look like a small offshore 6
legged rig. This shape was chosen, because of its
stability to pitch and roll.
A derrick on top the legs, will hold the
buoy payload and the cable along which the profiler
will move up and down..
