Nonlinear Optics
Instructor: K. Rosfjord ([email protected])
Location: EGR 3114
Time: MW 2:00pm - 3:15pm
Textbook: R.W. Boyd, “Nonlinear Optics” 3rd edition
ENEE 790 is NOT a prerequisite for this course.
Description
The course provides a comprehensive treatment of the
mathematical theory and experimental methods used in nonlinear optics. It is
intended for engineering or physics graduate students who are interested in
learning about nonlinear optical effects and how they can be used in practice.
Prerequisites Some background in introductory quantum mechanics and basic
knowledge of electromagnetic wave propagation. Please contact the instructor
if you are uncertain about your preparation.
Topics Nonlinear susceptibility, Anisotropic crystals, Nonlinear wave equations,
Sum frequency and second harmonic generation, Parametric amplification and
oscillation, Phase matching, Electrooptic modulation, Difference frequency
generation, Nonlinear refraction, Self focusing, Four-wave mixing, Phase
conjugation, Stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, and much more.
