Statistics and the Graphing
Calculator
Essential Question: How do you find the mean,
median, mode and standard deviation of a set of data
using the graphing calculator?
Students will write a summary of the steps to use the
graphing calculator at the end of their notes.
Before you start working with any data set
• Give your list a name by scrolling to the box at
the top of the column and typing in a name.
– You probably want to keep this short because you
will have to type it multiple times.
• If your data set is not already entered, scroll
down to box 1 in that same column and start
entering data values.
– Press enter between data values.
To find the mean..
• Scroll into a blank box in the body of the data
table and type “=mean(name of your list)”
• Hit enter
To find the median..
• Scroll into a blank box in the body of the data
table and type “=median(name of your list)”
• Hit enter
To find the mode..
• Scroll up so that the entire column with your data is
highlighted
• Hit Menu
• Select Actions and then Sort
• Scroll through your data to see if you can find values
that repeat.
To find the standard deviation…
• Scroll into a blank box in the body of the data table and
hit the catalogue button.
• Scroll down and select “=stDevPop()”
• Type in the name of your list
• Hit enter

• Select One-Variable Statistics
• # of lists should be 1
• X1 list should be the name that you gave your
list
• Don’t change anything else.
