How Theodore Roosevelt national park
was formed?
• It was formed within a short time after the death
of Theodore Roosevelt on January 6, 1919. There
were suggestions to set up a memorial in his
honor. Different studies took place across the
country that included ideas for national parks,
monuments, wildlife refuges, and scenic roads as
well as state parks.
• The Little Missouri Badlands were explored in
1924 by a party of 40 to outline an area for a
Roosevelt National Park.
When did the Theodore Roosevelt
become a National Park?
• It became a National Park November 10, 1978.
• The land was valuable because the land
included ideas for national parks, monuments,
wildlife refuges, and scenic roads as well as
state parks.
How is the land currently
changing?
• Weathering and eroding is happing every day
inside the park. Water flow and wind are
reshaping the land slowly. Sometimes fire and
natural disasters also change the shape of the
park.
What environmental issues are
affecting Theodore Roosevelt
National Park?
• One issue that is affecting the park is the
population of bison and buffalo. Park
managers have currently set the herd size to
approximately 200-400 bison/ buffalo in the
north unit and 100-300 in the south unit.
Population is controlled primarily to maintain
healthy range conditions and if there are too
many bison there will not be enough food for
all animals.
What special features are inside of
the park?
• Theodore Roosevelt has very interesting
attractions like really unique rock formations
and also very beautiful animals and natural
habitats.
What types of rocks can be found
inside the park?
• Two types of rocks can be found, Sedimentary
and Metamorphic.

How is technology used to help
preserve and maintain the park
• Park managers use fences to make sure
animals and people do not go outside
boundaries. They use sidewalks to guide
people through the park and use facilities so
people can buy gifts or food. Security cameras
are used to keep the park safe and there are
many public restrooms for visitors to use.
