Ecological Succession Foldable
Use your notes to make the following Foldable to help you understand
succession, or gradual change in the types of species that live in an area.
Creating your foldable:
1. Place a sheet of paper in front and fold the paper in half hamburger style. Fold in half again
hamburger style and LIGHTLY CREASE. Unfold.
2. Turn the paper so the fold is at the top and label Primary Succession and Secondary
Succession across the front of the paper, as shown. Draw an arrow down from each and
then label Climax Communities, as show. Circle all four labels.
3. Cut along the middle fold line up to the top of the crease to form two tabs as shown.
4. On the inside under each succession tab include the following information:
□ Describe when the process occurs
□ List pioneer species
□ List what the community starts from (soil or not)
□ Include how long this process takes relative to the other type of succession (longer? Shorter?)
□ Describe what type of disturbance leads to each type of succession.
