An astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of
the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills. This
site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other
tribes that have a connection to the area.

The monument is a geologic feature created when
magma, which is like lava, cooled suddenly.
Over time the
soil and rocks
covering it
eroded revealing
this formation of cooled magma.

Located near San Francisco, this land was purchased
to preserve its groves of redwood trees.
It was dedicated to John Muir, an
important California conservationist,
