Her full name is: Georgia Totto O’Keeffe
Born on November 15th, 1887 in Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin. Her parents were dairy farmers.
She was the first girl and the second of seven
children. Her parents were Hungarian
immigrants.

She attended the art institute of Chicago and the Art
Students League in New York City.
A major figure in American art since the 1920s.
Married the famous American photographer Alfred
Stieglitz who owned the gallery where her art would
first be shown. Some believe that it was thanks to him
that she received as much attention as she did at a
time when most women artists were not receiving
much publicity or attention.

Chiefly known for her unique capacity to
synthesize abstraction and representation in
paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal
bones and landscapes.

O'Keeffe was able to transform her subject
matter into powerful, abstract images.
O’Keeffe first visited New Mexico in the
summer of 1917. Between 1929 and 1949, she
spent part of every year working in New
Mexico.

In 1934, she discovered Ghost Ranch, an area
North of Abiquiu, whose painted desert of
dramatically colored, enormous cliffs inspired
some of her most famous paintings

She moved to New Mexico permanently in
1949—3 years after the death of her husband.
In 1984, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
She died at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1986 at
the age of 98.
