Metallic Bonds and
Properties of Metals
AHSGE Reading 2.3 Determine cause and
effect.
AHSGE Reading 4.3 Discern organizational
patterns.
Other AOD C.3.2 Recognize periodic trends of
elements, including the number of valence
electrons, atomic size, and reactivity.
What are some properties
of Metals?
Metallic Bonds
 Electron sea model: all the metal
atoms in a metallic solid contribute
their valence electrons to form a “sea”
of electrons
 These electrons are free to move from
atom to atom (delocalized electrons).
 Metallic bonds form from the
attraction of a metallic cation(??) for
the delocalized electrons
Metal Alloy
 Def.: a mixture of elements that has
metallic properties
 Examples:
 Steel is iron + at least one other element
 Brass is copper + zinc
 Assignment: Workbook (p.48)
