Bill Nye – Atoms
1. All things are made up o f ________________________.
2. Atoms comes from a Greek word that means:
_______________________________________________
3. What are the main parts of the atom?
a. ____________________________________
b. ____________________________________
c. ____________________________________
4. Atoms are mostly ______________________________
.
5. Expl ain ho w are atoms like letters.
_______________________________________________

_______________________________________________
6. What makes one atom different than another?
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
7. What does the atomic number represent?
______________________________________________
8. Name 3 types of energy.
a. _______________________
b. _______________________
c. _______________________
9. What are the building blocks of all matter?
______________________________________________
10.Why is carbon impo rtant?

11. Since the periodic table is like the alphabet and we use the
“letters” (atoms) to form words (“molecules”) let’s start with some
practice. Make some words out of the symbols from the periodic
table. Tr y to make the longest words you can think o f. There is a
prize (food) for the longest word and the most words.
Exa mples:
He + At = HeAt
Ag + U + Ir + Re = Agui rre

#7. Does increasing the weight of the film can affect the buoyant
force?
A.
Hypothesis: When you add pennies to the can, the
buoyant force will ________ because _________.
B.
Test it out:
C.
1.
Weight of heavier film can in air: _____ N
2.
Weight of heavier film can under water: _____N
3.
Buoyant force (subtract!!!) : _____N
Compare the buoyant forces (today’s vs yesterday’s)
#8. How does the buoyant force compare to the weight of the
displaced water?
A)
Collect displaced water from displacement tank
B)
Weigh it on the scale using NEWTONS!!!

A) # below symbol = atomic number
Atomic # = # of protons(reds)
B. # above the symbol = mass number
Mass number =particles inside the nucleus (reds and
blues)
C. Sometimes there is more than one mass numberAtoms can have different numbers of neutrons (blues)
These are called isotopes.
D) What about yellows?

What does the “Hit the Penny” model mean?
Why did so few alpha particles hit the nucleus?

HYPOTHESIS:
Rutherford expected the positively charged alpha
particles to pass through the gold atom
Why did they bounce off? (2 reasons)
Why did so many alpha particles miss the nucleus?
Because the atom is mostly….

Periods and Energy Levels
•Each horizontal row is
called a period.
•Periods tell us where
electrons go.
Water / H2O…….
1.
Is a COMPOUND: Pure substance made of more
than 1 type of atom
2.
Is a MOLECULE: Group of atoms bonded together
3.
Has 2 CHEMICAL BONDs: holds atoms together
4.
Has a COVALENT BOND: Electrons are shared.
•Elements in the 1st row
have 1 energy level.
•Elements in the 2nd row
have 2 energy levels.
•Etc……
