Magnets
Attract- two magnets will attract
(come together) when the two poles
are different- north and south
Repel-two magnets will repel (pull
away) when the two poles are alikesouth and south or north and north
Magnets attract to certain metals;
iron, cobalt, steel and nickel
Alloys are mixtures of different types
of metals. If the alloy has enough
iron, cobalt, steel or nickel in the
mixture it too will be magnetic

3 Types of Magnets
1. Natural- example: Magnetite Rock (contains iron
ore) Natural magnets are made from magnetite
“Lodestones” made of magnetite were used as
ancient compasses.
2. Man-made/Permanent- examples: Refrigerator,
horseshoe, bar, wand,cow magnets etc. These are
usually made of iron or steel but also some alloys.
3. Temporary- example: Electromagnets
These create magnetism from electricity that run
through wires. It stops being a magnet when the
electricity stops flowing.
Geographic North and
Magnetic North
• Geographic North is geographically
positioned on the north pole, the top of
the earth
• Magnetic North is slightly positioned
away from the Geographic North. This
is because scientists believe the earth’s
liquid core pulls a compass away from
true north because of the earth’s tilt
