Warm Up
• In your Interactive Student Notebook draw an
atom and label it’s parts.
• You have 1 minute think time
• You have 2 minutes draw time
• How did you do? Watch the video and
compare it to your drawing.

Matter
The term matter describes all of the
physical substances around us
Matter is anything that has mass
and takes up space
The Universe is made up of matter
and energy
*Matter is made up of
atoms.
*An atom is the smallest
whole particle of matter.
* The atom is made of three
smaller Sub-Atomic
particles: Protons, Neutrons,
and Electrons.
Early Models of the Atom
“Bohr Model”
• Electrons move in
definite orbits around
the nucleus
Modern Model of the Atom:
“The Electron Cloud”
• Spherical cloud of
varying density where
an electron is more or
less likely to be
Atomic Structure
• Nucleus contains:
-Neutrons
-Protons
• Electron Cloud
contains:
-Electrons
Graphic Organizer
Sub-atomic Particle
•
•
•
•
Protons = p+
Located in the nucleus of the atom
Have a positive charge (+)
Mass = 1 amu
Sub-atomic Particle
•
•
•
•
Neutrons = n0
Located in the nucleus of the atom
Are Neutral (Have no charge)
Mass = 1 amu
Sub-atomic Particle
• Electrons = e• Located in the electron cloud around the
outside of the nucleus
• Have a negative charge (-)
• Mass = 1/1840 amu
• Smallest sub-atomic particle

Atomic Vocabulary Review
Atom- The smallest piece of
a substance
Protons- Subatomic particle
found in the nucleus. It
has a positive charge
Nucleus – The center of an
atom
Neutrons- Subatomic
particle found in the
nucleus. It has no charge.
Neutral.
Electrons - Subatomic particle
found in the an area called
Energy levels. This is also
known as “The Electron Cloud.”
Negative charge.
The # of protons is the same as the # of electrons.
The mass of a proton & neutron is 1 amu. The mass of an electron is almost zero.

Describing Atoms
• Atomic Number = number of protons (# p+)
– Tell us the identity of the element.
– Atomic number is kind of like your student ID number.
# protons+ or # electrons-
• Mass Number = #p+ + #n0
the number of protons + the number of neutrons
• Atomic Mass = mass of protons+ + mass of
neutrons0 in the nucleus
Periodic Table
Atomic Number: Number of protons
Also # of electrons
Element’s Symbol:
An abbreviation for the
element.
8
O
Oxygen
Elements Name
Atomic Mass/Weight:
16
Weight of protons + neutrons.
