- the continuation of the preparation of the Biodiversity 2008 Conference of Parties;
- the beginning of the preparations for the 2008 UNEP Governing Council and UN Commission on
Sustainable Development.

uitgenodigd,
en dat zoekt naar wegen om tot een meer doorgedreven IEG te komen.
- Het VN-proces te New-York in het kader van UN-reform

Biodiversity
Raising the political profile on biodiversity: more high level political commitment:
Heads of Government
G8 +5 Heads of Government (implementation of the 10 activities of the Potsdam Initiative)
Follow up of the 8th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity: Portugal
is trying to take this issue forward at the EU level.
Preparations for COP 9 of the Convention on Biological Diversity ( Bonn, May 2008)

- Intensive, constructive and well –in- due -time communicated preparations at EU level.
- Support international discussions on improvement of CBD operations, taking into account relation to
operations of other international instruments.
- More effective collaboration between the biodiversity related conventions for the 2010 target.
- Federal Environment has signed the CD 2010 Declaration and will follow this up in concrete activities As BE
presidency will be in 2010, BE will be very involved both in preparation of COP9 as the follow up to COP10.
This issue therefore needs to stay high on the political agenda.
- Access and benefit sharing:ensure a constructive EU input in the international debate to make significant
progress in the development of an international regime on Access and Benefit Sharing within the CBD. The
regime could be a mix of legally and non legally binding instruments, such as inter alia an international
certificate of compliance.
- Ensure the integration of biodiversity concerns into climate change, adaptation and mitigation + strengthen
synergies between biodiversity and climate change policies, in particular Biofuels /Biomass production and
consumption, as well as reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries
- Forest Biodiversity will be a important topic on the agenda (forest protected areas, illegal logging and related
trade and forests and climate change, including biofuels)
