About ETMS
• The Ethiopian Meteorological Society is a
professional society registered in Ethiopia as
a charity organization, working in the field of
meteorology, hydrology and allied sciences.
• The Ethiopian Meteorological Society (ETMS)
is established in January 2007.
• It has also been re-registered in January
2010 according to the proclamation
No.621/2009 of the Charity Organization and
Societies of the Ethiopian Federal
Democratic Republic.
Aim
• Contribute to the promotion of the improvement and
modernization of the science of meteorology,
hydrology and atmospheric sciences in the Ethiopia;
• Create awareness among the public regarding the
benefit of meteorological science and to ensure that
researchers and students would have access to
meteorological information;
• Create communication with similar societies in the
country and abroad, with a view to exchanging
experience, appropriate new technologies and
knowledge;
• Cooperate with Regional and International
institutions that deal with the science of
Meteorology, Hydrology and Atmospheric sciences,
with a view to improving the Meteorological services
in the Ethiopia;
• Promote close association among the members of
the ETMS.

Membership
• voluntary basis and the society shall register
meteorologists and other related professionals as well as
students and any interested Organizations and or
Institutions associated with the work of meteorology,
hydrology and allied sciences.
• Membership is approved by the General Assembly of the
Society or by the Executive Committee as delegated by
the General Assembly.
• The categories of membership are
– Regular
– Student
– Organization
– Honorary
• As of June 2011 membership stands at 220.
Major events /activities
• The ETMS held the first Scientific Conference on
“Climate Change and Variability and it’s Impacts on
Ethiopia and Eastern Africa on 16 October 2008. The
proceeding’s has been published and distributed to
members and to concerned ones, also available
online.
• The Second Conference on "Climate Change and
Aviation Industry" was held on 26-27 April 2012.
Conference recommendation published.
• The ETMS held its first, second, third, fourth, fifth
and sixth Annual Regular General Assembly,
respectively in July 2007, in October 2008, in
December 2009 ,in February 2011, in 25 April 2012
and in April 2013 respectively
Activities cont---• Organized a seminar on weather forecast
presentation and terminology for users in April 2013
• Five ETMS officials and members visited China
Meteorological Society from 1 to 9 November 2011
and also attended the 2nd IFMS meeting.
• ETMS launched its website
www.ethiomet.gov.et\etms
• The first ETMS scientific journal was published in
April 2012

ETMS managed NMA/FAO data quality control and processing project

ETMS managed the International Research Institute Project on
Modeling.

ETMS managed the organization of the 2nd AfricaAdapt Meet and Greet
event
•
Issued the Society’ Newsletter twice a year

Support students and young scientists in their studies and research
work and enabled some senior students to obtain financial support
•
ETMS members made a tour of cultural and religious centres.

ETMS Research Priorities
• Research in climate variability and change
and their associated impacts on various
sectors such as drought, floods, water,
health, agriculture, energy, environment, etc.
will be given the highest priority
• Research in seasonal forecasting will also be
given priority. Short, medium and long-rang
forecasting will receive sufficient attention in
order to improve the accuracy of weather
forecast and climate outlook.

efforts which will help to improve the
operational activities of the National
Meteorological Agency (NMA)
• Research in allied sciences to meteorology
and those research projects addressing
environmental issues and problems will be
encouraged.

•
Organizing the Seventh General Assembly in December 2013
•
Organize a follow up seminar on weather presentation & terminology
with a view to publish a users’ guide
•
Raise funds to offer scholarships for postgraduate students at
Institutes of higher studies in Ethiopia based on ETMS training policy
•
Raise funds to offer research awards based on ETMS research policy
•
Participate in the 3rd IFMS, which will be held in UK.
•
Publish the 2nd ETMS Journal
•
Pursue efforts to enter in to collaborative activities with other
sister societies and regional and international institutions
Problems & challenges
• Lack of resources
• Retaining existing members and attracting
new ones
• Difficulty to establish cooperation with
international partners including with sister
societies
