THE THREE STRANDS OF GEOGRAPHY
Human Geography: This is about how human activity affects or is influenced by the
earth's surface, e.g. how people live in urban and rural environments.
Physical Geography: This is to do with our natural world. We investigate what forces
are responsible for shaping our planet.
Global Issues: This is to do with geographical issues that cross boarders, e.g.
pollution, environmental hazards, globalisation disease - and more!
SO, WHAT DO WE LEARN IN S3?
GLOBAL ISSUES
• Globalization : the good, the bad and the ugly!
• What’s the big deal about Climate Change?
• How do Hurricanes work? Investigating their impacts on people & the environment!

HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS
• Where does our food come from?
• What’s it like to live in one of the poorest places on earth?
Learn through a virtual field trip: “Famous, Rich & in the
Slums”. Then investigate & create a fact file of the deadly
diseases affecting people in the slums!
• Population Geography: Where do people live in the world
and why? Why is the global population exploding?
Investigating China’s two-child policy.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS
• Raging Rivers: How do they shape our land? (Fieldtrip to Stonehaven!)
• Weather: Why does it rain? Why are some places hotter than others? What is air
pressure? Let’s become mini meteorologists and explore what’s really controlling
our Weather!

ASSESSMENT
• Research Investigations (may include reports, PowerPoint presentations, posters, fact files)
• End of unit quizzes
• Value Added Unit: N4 report on rivers (pass/fail basis)
HOMEWORK
• Completing classroom work/extended learning opportunities
• Research tasks
• Revision for end of unit assessments
PROGRESSION TO SENIOR PHASE
• Pupils sitting S3 Geography will be equipped to study National-level Geography
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
• Studying Geography at school level develops a range of transferable skills such as
critical thinking, research, fieldwork & data analysis & communication skills.
• Learning about Geography at school opens many doors with regards to various careers:
• Hydrology, Climate Change Analyst, Meteorologist (Weather Reporter) Geology
(including studying volcanoes), Environmental Law, Cartographer, Commercial or
Residential Surveyor, Environmental Consultant, Teaching, Town planner, Environmental
Control and Management, Environmental Protection and Conservation, Exploration, IT
Management and Services, Scientific Research and Development… the list is endless!
