The role of MMT
– Hungarian Meteorological Society –
in the life of Hungarian meteorological
community since its establishment
Zoltán Dunkel
President of MMT
The only Hungarian meteorological scientific journal, named IDŐJARAS was established in 1897. After the WWI the
financial situation was so bad that no possibility was to maintain the journal. Mr. Rethly the great old man of Hungarian
meteorology suggested establishing a company to help IDŐJÁRÁS (in English: weather).
The foundation of the society happened in 1925.
The basic object of MMT is the study of meteorology improving the general education, disseminating meteorological
knowledge, the environmental mentality and new scientific results. The MMT organizes scientific meetings and symposia,
establishes permanent and ad hoc committees, maintains sections, co-operates with other institutions and international
organizations, issues and edits meteorological publications, prepares meteorological studies, and awards the outstanding
meteorological activities.
The Hungarian Meteorological Society besides helping to maintain IDŐJÁRÁS participated in the development and
popularization of meteorology between two world wars.
After 1949 because of the political situation it was some difficulties to maintain the international co-operation.
The Hungarian Meteorological Society organizing bi-annual meeting with the Slovakian Meteorological and Austrian Met
Societies promoted and helped the international co-operation.
Recently the Society has got more than 500 members. Many of them are students. The Society issues commonly with the
Hungarian Meteorological Service the LEGKÖR (means: atmosphere) a partly scientific partly popular paper to inform the
meteorological community. The climate change and the more and more frequent weather indicated catastrophes increased
the number of people interested in meteorology.
The new challenge of the Hungarian Society is how to handle the amateur and so called private meteorologists.
The Society was the forum of professional meteorologists in the past but in the near future the basic philosophy should be
changed. The exciting question how can we do it?
The Hungarian Meteorological Society was the founding member of EMS (European Meteorological Society) and IFMS in
2009 in Atlanta and would like continue its domestic and international work as actively as it did earlier.

Report on the activity of MMT - 2010
The Hungarian Meteorological Society (Magyar Meteorológiai Társaság - MMT) currently has 605 members, operates 4 regional divisions (in
Szeged, Pécs, Debrecen and Szombathely), and 7 professional groups (Group on Agro- and Biometeorology, Climate, Atmospheric Dynamics,
Atmospheric Environment, Solar- and Wind Energy, Aviation Meteorology, and the Róna Zsigmond Youth Group). In 2010, the activity of the
Group on Agro- and Biometeorology was the most significant, with 5 events organized, all together including 21 presentations. The most
animated regional division is the Szombathely Division, which is advocating also geography, as an associate science to meteorology, during its
activities.
Among our events, the prestigious events of the commemoration of the World Meteorological Day, and the Hungarian Meteorological
Scientific Days have to be first mentioned; they were both organized in collaboration with the Hungarian Meteorological Service. In 2010, the
Grape and Climate Conference was successfully organized for the second time. The Forest and Climate Conference also successfully took place
on the seventh occasion last year. It is to our joy to conclude that there are more and more young scientists participating at these events.
Our members receive regularly our periodical edited in collaboration with the Hungarian Meteorological Service called Légkör (Atmosphere) as
a free allowance since several years. As a fruit of an ardent recruiting activity of our membership (especially at the Szombathely Division) the
number of our members has grown last year. There are still two members who have legal status: the Hungarian Meteorological Service, and the
Geoinformatics Service of the Hungarian National Defence Office.
The main topics among our scientific sessions were urban climate, renewable energy sources, and a session in memoriam of Dezső Dévényi
(1948-2009), the former colleague of the Hungarian Meteorological Service, with the leading theme of numerical weather prediction. The
Hungarian Meteorological Society has attributed many awards in 2010: Péter Vig has received the STEINER LAJOS MEDALLION, the Scientific
Literature Award was attributed to the book of Ernő Mészáros (The history of the revelation of the atmosphere), two young scientists have
received the award of the RÓNA ZSIGMOND FOUNDATION, and the HEGYFOKY KABOS MEDALLION has been attributed to Pál Ambrózy for his
valuable and arduous work since many years.
The General Assembly of the Hungarian Meteorological Society has elected new leadership: Zoltán Dunkel as president, Aranka Maller and
Károly Tar as vice-presidents, and Klára Tarczay as secretary general.
The XXXIII. Distant Assembly of the Hungarian Meteorological Society took place in the city of Eger on the 30-31th August 2010. The main topic
of the sessions was the education of meteorology. In September, we have organized a meeting on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the
birth of Dénes Berényi with special focus on agrometeorology and climate.
Several sessions took place in 2010 in diverse fields of meteorology, to present latest project achievements and expanded applications of
meteorology. The Group on Agro- and Biometeorology has organized a session on the relationship between corn culture and climatic,
meteorological phenomena and drought, in collaboration with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the DMCSEE EU SEE Transnational Program
project and the GVOP project. Another session also took place in 2010 in the field of agrometeorology, which focused more on combined
modeling of weather and agriculture, the use of stochastic models, agricultural simulations, and the use of the results climate prediction
models. The Szombathely Division has invited professionals in the subject of weather forecasting in changed climate; the relationship between
meteorological fronts and wind energy; the application of weather information in water management; and even in more exotic topics like
water exploration in Sahara desert; or geological discoveries in Kyushun (Japan).
The Debrecen Division organized a meeting on the urban climate and human impact studies carried out in Debrecen.
The Group on Solar- and Wind Energy hold a session on the effects of photosynthetic active radiation and global radiation.
Presentations were also held in the field of climate change by the Szeged Division: one was discussing the future of weather and climate;
another was analyzing climate change and climate fluctuations.
The Group on Atmospheric Dynamics has invited two experts from abroad in 2010: Stan Benjamin talked about the development and
evaluation of an isentropic icosahedral global model – FIM; whereas Michael Ghil talked about data assimilation for the atmosphere, ocean
and climate, and presented some recent results. The Group on Climate, and Atmospheric Environment hold 1-1 presentations in 2010: one on
solar radiation and climate; an other on the modelling of air pollution on different scales.
In 2011, the flow of diverse sessions continued to be organized, in all of the divisions of the Hungarian Meteorological Society. The Group on
Atmospheric Dynamics held two sessions in collaboration with the Meteorological Scientific Committee of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences: one on the use of Ensemble Transform Kalman-filter in data assimilation; and on radar data assimilation in HIRLAM/ALADIN/AROME
models. The Hungarian Geographical Society and the Szombathely Division invited the Director of the National Geographical Museum; a
professor from the University of West Hungary who talked about the impact of volcanic eruptions on the weather; and a young scientist from
the same university who had a talk on the fifth smallest country in the world.
The Szeged Division organized a presentation entitled The Earth- the Planet of Life and the Living Planet.
The sessions in agrometeorology in 2011 included the talk of Dr. Andreas Matzarakis, who is the vice-president of the International Society of
Biometeorology, and a common event organized in collaboration with the Hungarian Karst- and Cave Research Society where the presenters
talked about cave climate and cave therapies.
The Group on Climate of the Hungarian Meteorological Society held a presentation on the climate, weather and water phenomena in year
2010 together with the Hungarian Meteorological Service and the Hungarian Hydrological Society. The Climate Group and the Solar- and Wind
Energy Group organized together an interesting session on renewable energies, which included presentations on the IPCC Report and the
possible mitigation of climate change impacts by using renewable energy resources.
The Group on Atmospheric Environment organized a session on nitrogen cascade.
The topic of the 36th Hungarian Meteorological Scientific Days which took place in November 2010 was Changing Climate and Impacts in the
Carpathian Basin. The celebration of World Meteorological Day in March 2011 had similar topic: Understanding Climate for Everyday Life. In
2011, Jean-Francios Geleyn, the Program Coordinator of the ALADIN Cooperation became laureate member of the Hungarian Meteorological
Society, and held a presentation on ALADIN R&D activities within an evolving pan-European landscape. In 2011, we have celebrated the 60th
Anniversary of the Meteorological Department of the University of Debrecen; and within the General Assembly meeting, we have
commemorated our teachers, Ferenc Rákóczi és Margit Császár Makainé for their 80th birthday anniversary. At this occasion, we have also
attributed the MMT awards and presented the public utility report of 2010 and budget of 2011 of MMT. A professor from the ELTE University
of Budapest made a presentation on the soil impact on weather and climate. The Róna Zsigmond Youth Group has organized two
presentations: in 2010 they invited a PhD student now developing vehicles, formerly studying meteorology. In 2011, the student awarded by
MMT in 2010 had a talk on chaotic movements in the atmosphere.
