Transcript Year 5 Weather Project!

This project incorporates two exciting activities designed to raise the
children’s awareness of Global warming and flooding!
These activities are the Year 5 weather project….
…and the whole school participation in the “Wicked Weather Watch” project.
In Year 5 children are taking part in a Weather Project using a
granted funded by the Royal Society. This is a three year project, the
first part of which is running this year. The children have researched
flooding and global warming to raise their awareness of the impact of
climate change.
They have carried out experiments to discover which sort of soil and
land lets water drain more quickly, in order to understand the impact
of building on green land and the impact of soil type on drainage.
Alongside this research, the children have been carrying out rigorous
data collection on weather patterns, which they will repeat next year to
carry out comparisons, look for patterns and compare with National
and International data.

Year 5
All around the
world the tides
are rising up and
over the borders!
Many places
around the world
are seeing this
but some in the
UK are ; Bradford,
Holt, Devon,
Cumbria and
Staverton.
Bradford stands on the
mighty river Avon which
makes Bradford a flood risk,
because of this the
Bradfordians decided to
put up a flood defence.
Global warming and
Rising Sea Levels
Every time we use
electricity or drive in our
cars we make our planet
warmer!
Global warming and flooding..
 Our rising temperatures are melting the ice caps in to the sea which is
causing the sea levels to rise!

Can we stop this
happening by using
less electricity?
Floodland in the United Kingdom
UK flood risk map
• The red areas on the map
show the areas that are
more likely to flood.
• The biggest floods are in
Wales and Scotland.
• It floods were rivers are (eg.
River Thames.)
You may think this
is not your
problem
BUT IT IS!!!
What did Year 5 children find out from
their research?
Some people are losing their
homes and their lives
because of flooding.
We can save energy.
The planet’s getting
warmer, making more
flooding.
Don’t pollute the rivers.
Antarctica is melting, pushing
more water out to sea.
The weather is changing because of
the greenhouse effect, trapping
more heat in. Ice melts into the
ocean. We found out where the
flooding was.
The children began
by investigating
water flow in the
local brook.
They children
designed experiments
to see how fast the
water drained through
rocks, soil and stones.
The children are using sophisticated equipment bought with a grant from the
Royal Society to measure a range of weather data, including rainfall, wind
speed and air pressure.
In the words of Chloe from Eagles:
“We’re trying to find out how weather is changing. We’re using a
machine in the garden. This sends data to the machine in Year 6.
We’re collecting data because our topic was flooding, and we wanted
to look more deeply into the effect of climate change on our
environment.
I like it because it’s a bit like a mystery! We collected information on
the wind speed and rain, all sorts of information. The expert was
called Alice. We’re going to see how climate change effects our
planet!”
The Royal Society sent a film crew to see how we are getting on with
our project 

This year the focus has been on the importance of data collection, and how rigorous
collection can allow us to spot patterns in the weather and climate.
Mrs Ellis has introduced
to whole school to the
Wicked Weather Watch,
and has signed us up to
be a participating school
to follow the exciting
journey of explorer
David Hempleman
Adams as he attempts to
cross the Arctic Ocean
this summer.
We had a whole school
assembly by Gill Johnson to tell
us more about this exciting
project and we have a visit from
David Hempletone-Adams
when he returns from the Polar
Ice Challenge.
Our assembly on climate change
and the Polar Challenge..
The golden toad was
the first species to go
extinct because of
climate change and
habitat loss.
