Atmosphere
divided into layers determined by variation of
temperature with height.
lowest level, Troposphere
temperature decreases with height up to about
10 km.

Stratosphere : temperature increases
with height.
The increase in temperature is
caused by absorption of ultraviolet
radiation by the ozone layer
STRATOSPHERE:
O3 molecule is made of 3 O atoms.
UV light breaks up O2. Then one O can
combine with O2 to form O3.
O2 formed by photosynthesis (plants) in
the troposphere. If if were not for plants,
we would not have an O3 layer.
STRATOSPHERE:
Less mass found here
Ozone is the most important molecule (in
lower layers of stratosphere; first 10 miles).
3 pennies stacked up is the size of the O3
layer if condensed down.
O3 absorbs UV light
O3 destruction is = to reformation in a healthy
functioning system (O3--- O2 + O)
Now O3 destruction is happening more than
O3 reformation
CFC’s; Chlorine portion is the culprit
Mesosphere: temperature
decreases with height.
ionosphere, the highest layer in the
atmosphere
temperatures increase with height due to
ultraviolet radiation.

Acceleration of Greenhouse
Effect…Global Warming:
Too much heat is trapped.
Have measured increase in
greenhouse gases such as CO2
and the rise in temperature for
150 years.
Two major causes for increase
in CO2: industry/power plants
and automobiles.
