Climate Change Risks in Morocco
• Water scarcity (including groundwater) and
drought
• Coastal flooding and beach erosion
• Salinization of coastal lands and aquifers
• Erosion of land and dam siltation
• Biodiversity loss and fragilized natural habitats
With impact on sylvo-agricultural activities,
fisheries potential, water infrastructures, tourism,
industry, daily life (water quality and quantity,
local food supply…)

The CBA strategy focuses on:
• 3 geo-climatical areas :
– Coast
Mediterranean coast
– Forest
Middle Atlas Mountains
– Oasis
South / desertic-saharian
• 3 sectors, considered interdependently :
– Agriculture
– Water resources
– Forest resources

Enhancing the resilience of 2 oasian ecosystems to the
impacts of climate change ;
Main activities :
- Adaptation Revolving Fund
(irrigation, replantation)
- Pilot replantation of local species
adaptable to water scarcity
(agroforestry)
- Capacity building / Training
2 projects _ Preparatory phase _ Concepts approved
CBA budget : US$ 35 000 each project (total US$ 70 000)

Community participation
• Tradition of collective management of natural resources and community
participation (example of water management in Oasis) ;
• Tradition eroding but emergence of new forms of community mobilization:
• Since 2001, national programs encouraging the development of
associations and supporting their work and projects (INDH, ADS,
Ministery of Environment…), especially in social and economic fields;
• Increasing women’s participation (women’s associations, including in
rural areas).
• Crucial need for capacity-building in terms of natural resource
management / environment / climate change.
