The Challenge
Climate changes – global warming

Most leaders and scientists
Global concensus
1973
• Climate is humanity’s
biggest challenge for the
future
• Huge commitments have to
be made globally to reduce
the green house effect.

3
Traffic, a strong green house driver
• Reducing the CO2
emissions from traffic
will be crucial in order
to avoid future climate
catastrophes.

4
How to reduce oil dependency and
fossil CO2 emissions from traffic?
Only three options available
• Curb the uncontrolled growth of
transport
• Increase energy efficiency
• Increase use of bio fuels.
www.balticbiogasbus.eu
5
Public transport, part of the solution
• More attractive public transport services to
increase market share
• Increased sustainability within the public
transport system

The Project: Baltic Biogas Bus
A project to stimulate the use of biogas as fuel for
city buses aiming to reduce environmental impact.

Baltic Sea Region program 2007–2013
The Baltic Sea Region:
an attractive region to invest,
work and live in
The BSR strategy focuses on
four areas: environment,
economy, accessibility and
security
The Baltic Biogas Bus project is
one of approx 45 projects
in the BSR program

Part of the Climate Change Strategy
In an efficient strategy to limit the
impact from traffic on climate change,
extended use of biogas for city buses
will
- lower emissions
- improve inner city air quality
- strengthen the role of public
transport

Goals and budget
• Generate regional strategies to
introduce biogas bus operations
• Analyse necessary measures in
biogas production, distribution and
bus operations
• Conduct activities to facilitate
further expansion.
• Period:
• Budget:
• Financing:
2009–2012.
4,2 MEUR.
Partly by the EU fund
(ERDF).

A competitive challenge
• Dependency on fossil fuels has
increased the interest for
investment in new energy
• Public intervention to support
energy innovation is both
motivated and necessary
• The challenge: to make bio
fuels economically competitive
to fossil fuels.

available 2nd generation bio fuel

A challenge to disseminate
knowledge
• Sharing of knowledge is crucial
for a successful implementation
of the climate change strategy.
• To disseminate the benefits of
biogas as a fuel for buses is an
important part of the project

A process with several steps
For efficient use of biogas buses
we must investigate further
• Production from biomaterials
• Purification to fuel
• Distribution
• Handling of biogas at bus depots

14
The benefits of biogas
• Biogas is a 100% renewable
fuel
• From natural degradable
processes of waste products
• From households,
restaurants and sewage
treatment plants
• Similar to natural gas CNG
but renewable
• Locally produced

Expected results from the BBB project
• Strategies and policies to
introduce biogas
• Analysis of necessary measures
in production, distribution and
bus operations
• Execute activities to facilitate
further expansion
• Dissemination

Core messages
• Biogas is 100 percent renewable
and thus a suitable fuel for
city buses.
• Using Biogas as fuel can be more
climate effective than using it for
electricity and heating.
• Biogas is produced locally from
local raw materials.
